Stone’s stay was as a participant in the Hill End Artists in Residence program.
Stone embarked on the Residency with the aim, like many before her, to research and develop a new body of work.
What emerged was not only a new body of work but a definite shift in her practice.
Stone moved her focus from abstract landscape painting onto more figurative works.
During her time in Hill End, Stone continued to investigate the layers of history and the marks of time in the ghostly village.
This was in an effort to understand the myth and phenomenology of the history of its settlement.
What resulted was the suite of works featured in The Space Between.
Stone writes: “Prior to Hill End my work was landscape based, yet quickly and without intention, my studies became active with figures.
“Studies show the dark of the night, with firelight casting shadows, pensive and moody.
“Figures here inhabit the space between life and death. Dusk. That space between day and night, quiet that space between one sound and another.
“What a restless place Hill End is, for all its apparent isolation and quietude.”
Working between painting, drawing, and photography, Stone has deftly documented her experiences during her residency.
She has provided yet another viewpoint of the mysterious spaces and happenings of Hill End.
Ruth Stone: The Space Between will be on exhibition until Sunday 26 June 2016.
