The 4.2 kilometre stretch of road from the intersection of Esrom Street and Eglinton Road through to Hamilton Street in Eglinton makes Jason Slattery’s blood boil.
Potholes scatter the road and sections along the side of Hamilton Street have been dug up, and Mr Slattery said residents and motorists have had enough.
“I appreciate that the weather is causing this, but something’s got to be done,” he said.
“It’s not only dangerous, but sub-standard for a quickly growing community.
“I believe this road, with the amount of new development going on, should be like Suttor Street with the hot mix.”
Mr Slattery acknowledged that Bathurst Regional Council had conducted some repairs of the stretch of road.
“It seems to be a waste of money doing the repairs … every time we get a bit of rain it happens,” he said.
“It’s time someone did something about this.”
In order to gather support to encourage council to fix the road, Mr Slattery has started a petition.
It’s not only dangerous, but sub-standard for a quickly growing community.
- Jason Slattery
He was roadside near Eglinton Bridge on Friday and will be there again early next week collecting signatures.
“People are saying why are we wasting this money with bodgie repairs just to fix the problem for a day when it breaks down the next day,” he said.
“I’ve talked to a few neighbours and shopkeepers who have already signed the petition. One man said he’d broken a wheel on his Harley Davidson in a pothole.”
Truck movements on Hamilton Street have also prompted Mr Slattery to urge council to introduce a weight limit for the road.
The petition will be running for the next two weeks, before Mr Slattery passes it on to a few key people.
“Copies of this petition will be hand delivered to the general manager of Bathurst Regional Council, Western Advocate and local member of parliament Paul Toole,” he said.
“They’ve got to take note.”
Mr Slattery will be on the Eglinton Road, near the bridge, on Monday and Tuesday morning next week with the petition. It will also be available to sign at The Eglinton Store for the next two weeks.
