Much has been said about the form of Lions duo Georgia Goulding (18 goals) and Rachelle Godman (16), but in Mariners’ combination of Jess Salomoni, Sammie Wood, Kristy Collingridge and Tayla Lloyd have struck 22 times this season.
“They’ve got good strikers, but so do we and the stats will show we’ve also got the best defence in the league as well. But I think all the talk about that is garbage, it comes down to who goes out there and plays the best,” Mariners coach Mick Godbier said.
“I am really confident with what we have going forward this year.”
While it is has been five weeks since the Mariners have been able to train outdoors due to the wet weather, Godbier’s squad are keen to take on the Lions.
They are confident too given they have only lost once this season. Against the Lions, who last season played in the higher tier Premier Leagues 2 competition, the Mariners have drawn 2-all and won 2-1 so far in 2016.
“The girls are keen to get on the paddock and for the first time this season, I can say this Sunday will be my best 11,” Godbier said.
Kick off is 3pm at David Phillips Field on Sunday.
