In the most lop-sided all-Orange game in over a decade, the green and golds won 88-0 against a youthful but well outplayed Hawks outfit.
CYMS fullback Ben McAlpine racked up 28 points on his own from 12 conversions and a try, a cracking solo effort off a botched short kick-off.
Jerome Harrison, Ryan Griffin, Sam Hill, Larsen Marabe and Dom Maley all scored doubles, with the latter’s performance in the six jumper the catalyst for the win.
Maley and captain-coach Mick Sullivan had a hand in all eight of their side’s first half tries, and Sullivan said he’s never been part of a win as big – not in senior footy, anyway – and believes “when we stick, it’s pretty scary”.
“(Saturday) was one of those days,” he said post game.
“There were some pretty outstanding tries to be honest. We were pretty red-hot. I don’t think we’ve ever played like that.
“Disappointing not to hit 100. Some of that footy was just clinical.”
That last comment isn’t being cocky either – CYMS blew a ton.
They led 88-0 after Marabe bustled 40 metres to score his second with 10 minutes remaining on the clock.
In that time, Hawks dug deep and should have crossed for their own four-pointer after Jedd Kennedy regathered a Brodie Christoperson chip kick and raced into the back field.
CYMS shut that play down, though, securing a vital positive, points differential win, one that now has Sullivan’s side in the box seat for a second consecutive minor premiership.
The best dry-weather footy team in Group 10, if not the region, CYMS has the bye next week before another home game against Blayney and a tough road trip to Bathurst St Pat’s – the only side CYMS hasn’t beaten this season.
“Our big thing is not to get too far ahead of ourselves,” Sullivan said.
“Job done and well done, but you’ve got to set the benchmark higher than that.
“(The minor premiership) is ours to lose from here. Especially after that footy.”
The defending premiers opened the scoring through Brock McGarity after just two minutes, beginning what would be a relentless procession of points in the first stanza.
The ruthlessness continued in the second half too, with Hawks starved off possession for the entire period.
Aside from dropping the ball off the kick-off, it took the two blues seven minutes to get a touch on the football again in the second stanza as CYMS ran in three quick-fire tries to continue the rot.
The only sour note, CYMS lost both McGarity and Mitch Davis to hamstring niggles but Sullivan said both could play after the bye.
