The accident occurred just before 1pm, one kilometre west of Gardiners Lane at Vittoria.
Crash investigators are at the scene, with the highway expected to closed well into the evening.
Traffic is being diverted at Bathurst onto the Mid Western Highway to Blayney, and then Millthorpe Road to rejoin the Mitchell Highway.
