This years event attracted 9 players, Allyson Schumacher, Rod Schumacher, Jason Molkentin, Matt Gibson, Garth Hindmarch, Dave Fuller, Guy Fletcher, John Bullock and Bryan Reiri, who were all eager to win that golden trophy.
In the open event there were two pools, A and B, with the format best of 10 games. After all rounds were completed it came down to the semi-finalists. The first semi saw Guy Fletcher take on Matt Gibson. This match was an epic struggle, however it was Guy Fletcher who prevailed in the end 9-7.
The second semi looked as though it was going to be a walk in the park for the hot favourite Rod Schumacher, as he was up against former Bathurst Junior Champion John Bullock. Bullock turned back the clock having Schumacher frustrated with his wide range of crafty shots. Playing first to nine with a tiebreaker at 8 all, it was not going to be easy for Bullock but he took Schumacher to 8 games all with only the tiebreaker to decide the match.
Bullock led the tiebreaker 4-2 and looked as though he was heading for a huge upset but Schumacher's bulldog grit saw his close the tiebreaker 7-4 and the 9-8 . It was now down to the final between Fletcher and Schumacher. Playing his usual steady game, Guy was totally focused and in control frustrating Schumacher into errors and taking the match 9-3. it was a gutsy win from Fletcher who thoroughly deserved his win.
The “A” reserve singles had a good line up of players. Jacob Bicanic, Bryson Richards, Jason Honeyman, Brian Dwyer and Les Moulds were all out to win the big one. However it came down to the final between veteran campaigner Les Moulds and top young gun Bryson Richards. Richards had Moulds in panic mode with his power serving and huge forehands, dominating the match. Moulds showed glimpses of brilliance but in the end was outclassed by young gun Richards 9-4.
The “B” grade singles line up of Phil Church, David Bant, Chris Dorman, Sarah Tree, Paul Clancy and Jim Geyer, were all raring to go. The final came down to Paul Clancy versus Andrew Howarth. Clancy and Howarth threw everything at each other playing good quality tennis. Clancy took the hard fought match 8-6.
Club president Brian Dwyer would like to thank all the players for participating. Also a huge thank you to our sponsor, Spencer Fuller Associates for making our tournament possible and our master chef Phil Church for cooking the meals for the players on the day.
Good Hitting.
