Social Bowls
The weather stopped the Tuesday social competition but a beautiful Saturday afternoon made up for it. Daily rink winners were the Steve Corby, Bruce Parr and Ken Hartwig combination collecting a 12 point, 25-13 win over Mick McDonald, Ian Dewes and Jim Fry. The McDonald team looked the stronger in the early ends and held a 7-2 lead at the end of the seventh end.
It was at this point that the Corby team kicked up a gear and in a run of two, two and a magnificent six end winning streak, took the lead at 12-7 and from here were never headed. Collecting four shot wins in the 13th and 15th ends, the Corby team simply outscored the McDonald team, despite the total end wins going to the McDonald team 11 to 10.
On rink three, Terry Burke and Tony Press scored an 18-15 win over Darryl Whitton and Greg Quartly-Scott and then picked up the Jackpot back in the Clubhouse. The Burke team took the early points and had a four shot lead in the third end before the Whitton team scored a three in the fourth end and a one in the fifth to have the game all even going into the sixth end.
By the tenth end the Whitton team had the lead for the first time at 8-7. The Burke team maintained the pressure to rest the lead back again in the 13th end at 10-9. With a three shot win in the 15th end, the lead was again back with the Whitton team at 12-11. The 19th when the Burke team took over the scoring completely to settle the contest with a run of two, two and one in the final three ends to seal the match.
A 10 shot margin, 24-14 win for the Darryl Bellamy and Gus Thurgood combination was hard won over David Josh and Terry Clark, who held the lead at one stage and almost caused an upset in the latter part of the match. Jumping from the blocks to lead 3-0 at the end of the second end before the Josh team collected their first points, the Bellamy team then dropped behind 5-3 before getting back on the board in the sixth end. By the end of the eighth end, the Bellamy team had the lead back at 9-5 with the Josh team coming at them over the next two ends and by the 10th end, the Bellamy team held the lead by the narrowest of margins at 9-8. They then increased their lead to 13-8 by the end of the 14th end and looked like they had the running but the Josh team were not done yet and came back with a four then one in the 15th and 16th ends to have the game all even at 13 all. But from here it was all the Bellamy team with a four shot win in the 17th end followed by a two, three, two shot winning run which pushed their lead out to 24-13 going into the last end. The Josh team were gone and could only manage a single shot in the last end to finish the match 10 shots in arrears but well played everyone.
An even bigger 14 shot margin win of 30-16 was delivered by the Alan Clark, Ron McGarry and Kerry Connor team against Derrick Huender, Barry Quigley and Ted Crouch. The Huender team were left stunned by the Clark team from the outset with the Clark team lead sitting at 21-0 going into the 10th end when the Huender team scored their first points. Despite reaching double figures in the 16th end, the Huender team were down 25-10 at that point and when the Clark team scored a four shot win in the 17th end, the icing was on the cake. Despite coming home the stronger with a two, one and four in the final five ends, the Huender team were well and truly licked.
It looked like a similar story in the early stages of the game between Jean Wilde and Helen Hunt, who won by the slimmest of margins at 14-13 against Merle Stevens and Margaret Hayes. Jumping from the blocks and scoring on the first five ends, the Wilde team held the lead 8-0 going into the sixth end where the Stephens team scored their first points. By the time the Stephens team scored again in the 10th end, the Wilde team lead was out to 11-3 and looked unassailable. By the 13th end when the Stephens team were back on the card with a two, the Wilde team lead was 14-6. Despite a rush to the finish with four, one and two by the Stephens team to get within one point of the lead, the Wilde team held on to collect the silver at the end of the match.
Similar techniques were demonstrated in the 13-12 win by the Betsey Thornberry and Helen Gibson combination against Marj Nyland and Wendy Rayner. The Nyland team collected first points with a one in the first end, but didn’t get back on the card again until the ninth end with another one, but the Thornberry team lead at this point was 9-2. Another two in the 10th end for the Thornberry team had them in front 11-2 when the Nyland team decided it was time to start playing and scored on the next six ends to hold a one shot lead of 12-11 at the end of the 16th end. In the following additional two ends played the Thornberry team scored ones in each to take out the match 13-12.
Sunday 7th August was the next round in the Social Mixed Triples tournament with three rinks of varied and mixed combinations in action. On rink six, Merle Stephens and Joy Bembrick teamed up to take on Alan Clark and Greg Quartly-Scott for a 16 all final score. In a match that could have gone either way, the Stephens team won the first three ends before the Clark team scored first points in the fourth end. By the seventh end, when the Clark team again scored, the Stephens team led by 8-2 but a scoring run by the Clark team from this point, which included a five and a four, had the Clark team in front 14-9 going into the final three ends. With a three and a two by the Stephens team in the next two ends they led by 16-14 with one end to play where the Clark team scored a two to even the match at 16 all.
A much more dominant performance was registered on rink five with Bob Bembrick, Ron McGarry and Pauline Clark delivering a 21-5 win over Jean Wilde, Jenny Press and Tony Press. The Bembrick team jumped first with a one and two shot win which was countered by a two in the third end by the Wilde team. By the time the Wilde team saw the score card again in the 12th end, the Bembrick team held the lead 21-2 and despite winning the final three ends, the Wilde team could not get back in the match.
In the final match of the day, Gus Thurgood and Betsey Thornberry combined to score a convincing 17-8 win over Tony Hogan and Marj Nyland. Soring a four in the first end, the Thurgood team were certainly off to a good start and the Hogan team could only manage a one shot win in the next end in response. By the time the Hogan team scored again in the sixth end, the Thurgood team were in front 11-1 and cruising. Winning nine to six ends the Thurgood team certainly deserved their place at the barbeque table with all the players after the match.
The next round of the Sunday Social Mixed Triples will be held on Sunday the 4th September with play set to commence at 11 am with a barbeque lunch to follow for a very reasonable $10 fee, which includes equipment, green fees and lunch. An invitation is extended to all members of the Majellan Bowling Club, their Guests and the wider community to come along and enjoy the game of lawn bowls in the most relaxed atmosphere in Bathurst. Even if you have never played the game before, this is your opportunity to give it a go and have some fun with your mates or with your future mates.
That’s it for another busy week at the Majellan readers and I leave you with this from Theodore Roosevelt, “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month.”
