Social Bowls: The Tuesday Afternoon Social Competition attracted four rinks of bowlers this week and the Terry Burke and Greg Quartly-Scott combination took the game and daily rink win 19-15 on rink three against Kevin Howard and Glen Fields. The Burke team ran out four shot winners.
Daryl Bellamy and Gus Thurgood took a comfortable 24-12 win over Paul Kennedy, back from a break, and Mick Redfern on rink four. The Kennedy team won four of the remaining ends but could only manage one shot wins and they struggled into double figures in the 16th end. The Bellamy team collected two’s in the 17th and 21st ends to win the match well.
Noel Witney, Frank Farrell and Barry O’Keefe won comfortably in the end 27-20 over Tony McNamara, Peter O’Hara and Tony Pallister after a very slow start. The Witney team scored a one in the third end and didn’t get back on the card until the eighth end by which time the McNamara team had a lead of 12-1 and looked to be in control. From here, however, the Witney team took control scoring a two, four, four, three and one run from the eighth to the 12th ends to take the lead 15-12 at the end of the 12th end. The McNamara team came back with a two and four in the next two ends to regain the lead 18-15 at the 14th end, but it was not to last. With yet another run of end wins three, two, three, one and two, the Witney team had the lead by 26-18 going into the last two ends. Despite a two by the McNamara team in the 20th end, it was all over but good bowls all round.
In the final game of the day, it was Tony Hogan, Ron McGarry and Bob Bembrick who took the win 22-18 over the three Clark boys, Alan, Terry and Jim on rink six. Despite the Clark team scoring two’s in the 15th, 17th and 18th ends, they simply could not pull the score back and the Hogan team ran out four shot winners.
Saturday Afternoon Social Competition: Three games of pairs and three of triples were played, despite the cool temperatures. Daily rink winners were the Kerry Connors and Ted Crouch combination taking a 26-24 win over Tony Hogan and Ron McGarry. By the 22nd end the game was all square on the card at 21 all and it was anyone’s to win. With a five shot win in the 23rd end the Connor team declared their interest in the win and despite the Hogan team scoring a two in the 24th and a one in the 25th it was not enough but well done all.
Marlene Naylor and Margaret Hayes teamed up to score a 23-13 win over Helen Hunt and Thelma Smith. In a never headed win, the Naylor team scored in the first four ends to lead 7-0 before the Hunt team collected first points with a one in the fifth end. Scoring three shot wins in the seventh, eighth and 10th ends, the Hunt team were just one shot behind at 11-10 going into the 11th end but they couldn’t maintain the pressure and the Naylor team ran away with the final ends collecting two three shot wins in the process.
Tony McNamara and Tony Press combined to collect a 27-14 win over David Josh and Mick Simons after the Josh team scored the early points to lead 2-0 going into the third end. Announcing their clear intent early the McNamara team opened their scoring in the third end with a six to easily put them in front and from here they were never headed. They scored four shot wins in the ninth and 15th ends and three shot wins in the fifth and 20th ends, while the Josh team’s best effort was a three in the fourth end and a two in the sixth and 16th ends. Weight of numbers gave the match by 13 shots to the McNamara team.
Marie Nyland, Pauline Clark and Wendy Rayner scored a 17-12 win over Denise Huender, Pauline Clark and Lorna Hayes, despite the game being all tied up at 4-4 in the sixth end. A run of six end wins, which included a two, and two four shot wins from the sixth to the 11th end by the Naylor team to give them a 16-4 lead, effectively destroyed the chances of the Huender team. Despite a valiant effort by the Huender team to claw back with two shot end wins in the 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th ends, the damage had been done but a good game by all.
Jackpot winners: Paul Kennedy, Glen Urza and Terry Clark who also scored a comfortable 22-15 win over Alan Clark, John Patton and Jim Fry. In an early jump, the Kennedy team scored four and three in the first two ends before the Clark team scored first points with a one in the third end. By the fifth end the Kennedy team lead was 9-1 but the Clark team scored with a two, two, one run to trail by just three at 9-6 going into the eighth end. By the 11th end, the Kennedy team lead was just one at 11-10 but by the end of the 14th end it was out again to 15-10. The Clark team then came back with a one and two to trail by just two at 15-13, but the Kennedy team decided to up the odds and scored a four shot win in the 17th end to push their lead out to 19-13. The next four ends went two each but the Kennedy team scored a two and one while the Clark team managed on two one’s to go down in the finish by seven shots.
Noel Witney, Paul Stuckarft and Tony Urza scored a 28-13 win over Daryl Bellamy, Barry O’Keefe and Bob Bembrick with the Witney team getting off to a flyer start. When it looked like the Bellamy team were getting close after scoring a four in the 12th end, the Witney team came back with their own four on the very next end to push their lead out to 18-12 going into the 14th end. From the 14th end, the Bellamy team were able to win just the one end as the Witney team steam rolled through to the finish for a comfortable win.
Competition: Derrick Huender scored a never headed 31-25 win over Roger Cooper in the first round of the 2016 Club Minor Singles Championship, despite a late run from Cooper in the latter stages of the match.
In the Final of the 2016 Men’s four’s competition held on Sunday, August 14, Glen Urza, Jim Fry, Ted Crouch and Tony Hogan narrowly defeated Alan Clark, Tony Press and Frank Farrell by just one shot at 21-20.
That’s it for another busy week at the Majellan readers and I leave you with this from American Jay Leno, “How come you never see a headline like “Psychic Wins Lottery”?”.
