All Saints’ year 7/8 and Cathedral’s year 5/6 squads will take on the state’s best at Sydney Olympic Park next month after staking their claims as the best school sides for their age in the Central West.
The victory for the All Saints squad was especially satisfying for coach Trudy O’Connor given the opposition her team had to overcome.
“Historically, Orange High have been the team to beat around this region and have been fairly unbeatable recently,” she said.
“We came second to Orange High during the Bathurst carnival. They took the two top teams from that to go on to the regional carnival in Orange.”
All Saints picked up wins against Dunedoo Central School, Parkes High, South Dubbo Campus and Condobolin High in their pool games but went down by two points to Orange High.
Another win over South Dubbo put the Bathurst school through to the final and give them a chance at redemption against Orange High.
All Saints turned things around as they took a 3-2 lead into half-time before storming away late in the game for a memorable 11-6 victory.
“They put on their triple-A game for the grand final,” O’Connor said of her team.
“They probably played one of the best games I’ve ever seen them play. They’re a sensational team.”
