This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, one of the most extraordinary events in Australia’s military history.
The brave young men from D Company 6RAR resisted an attack of 1500-2500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. It was a battle of epic proportions in which the enemy was eventually forced to disengage.
During the battle 18 Australians were killed and 21 wounded.
Every year, on August 18 Australians stop and honour all those who served in Vietnam and recognise their service and sacrifice.
In Bathurst, a service to mark the anniversary was held at the Carillon on Thursday.
On the day a limited number of badges to mark the 50th Year of the Battle of Long Tan were also available at the Bathurst RSL Club with proceeds donated to the Bathurst Vietnam Veterans.
But a second march and service will be held on Sunday at the Vietnam Veterans Park, starting at 10.30am for 11am service.
Guest speakers at the service will include Angus Fittler from Oberon High School, Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee and State Member for Bathurst Paul Toole.
The salute will be taken by Chifley Local Area Command’s Inspector Lionel White.
Those attending the service are invited to return to the club for lunch, courtesy of the Bathurst and District Vietnam Veterans, and the Bathurst RSL Club.
