Peter James Sait, 61, pleaded guilty in the Bathurst District Court in June to dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.
He gave evidence in the current sittings of the District Court before Judge Bennett this week, where he spoke of his remorse and told the court he took “full responsibility” for the crash.
A 43-year-old man died in the crash on January 18, 2015 and a 14-year-old girl was flown to Sydney to be treated for her injuries.
Giving evidence, Sait told the court he had never been on Mount Panorama before the crash but had seen it on television during the Bathurst 1000.
He told the court he believed it was a one-way street and did not see signage at the entrance of the Mount indicating the track was in fact, two-way traffic.
Giving evidence this week, Sait recalled a conversation immediately after the crash with two men who were at the scene. He asked one of them if it was a one-way road.
After being told it wasn’t he asked the other male where the lines marking the road [indicating two lanes] were.
The court also heard that later on the day of the fatality he attended Bathurst police station and signed a typed document asserting the driver of the motorcycle was on the wrong side of the road.
Sait said at the time he signed this he was in shock and later accepted, after seeing photos of the crash site, that he was on the wrong side of the road.
“At the time [I signed the document] I was in shock,” he said.
“I’m very sad about the accident, I take full responsibility for it. I was in shock and confused.”
Under cross examination from the Crown, Sait told the court he didn’t see any other cars on the track before the crash occurred.
