The open doubles attracted five strong pairs, Lynch- Bullock, Wilkinson - Moulds, Reiri - Simpson, Raveneau - Arnold and Fuller- Tree, with the favourites Brooke lynch and John Bullock going for there third open title.
The format this year was first to eight, with a tie breaker at seven all. The favourites Lynch and Bullock never dropped a set beating all of their rivals and storming into the final in stylish fashion. They were up against Les Moulds and Craig Wilkinson who came in second spot on the ladder. Lynch and Bullock who beat the Moulds - Wilkinson pair 8-4 in there round match were going in as the hot pair to beat.
However it started out shakey for Lynch and Bullock who lost the first set 6-4. Wilkinson and Moulds played some very crafty tennis.
However Bullock and Lynch fought back to take the second set 6-4. It was all now down to a tie breaker to decide the match. The crowd were on the edge of there seats as a boilover was looming. It was seven all in the tie break and things were tight. Bullock had a sitter on the net and belted it long to give Moulds and Wilkinson an 8-7 lead.
Moulds was serving at 8-7 to the fore hand court with Lynch ready to pounce on the short ball. Lynch’s returned was hard and low but Wilkinson guided it down Bullocks line for a winner.
It was now 9-7 with Moulds and Wilkinson serving for the match. In one of the longest rallies in the match Moulds ended up hitting a loose lob return from Lynch for a winner and claiming the match in a huge boiler, much to the delight of the crowd.
The winning pair were thrilled at there victory.
Bullock said. The ''A'' Reserve final was another upset victory as the hot favourites brother and sister combination of Sarah Tree and Matt Tree went down to the underdog pairing of Barry Lindsay and Phil Church 6-4, 6-3.
Lindsay's slice forehand in the blustery conditions upset the big guns who were on the back foot and in panic mode. Churches net play was spot on and had all the answers to the Trees tactics. It was a great victory for the Lindsay - Church duo who dominated the play from the word go.
Tree said. The ''B'' grade saw Stacey Markwick and Matt Dunn win 6-4, 6-4. Both Stacey and Matt looked sharp and totally in control in their stylish win. Well folks another great championship day.
A big thank you to Rod Schumacher and Kevin Tree who co-ordinated the tournament. A huge thank you to Libby and Graeme Stapleton for cooking the food for all of our players. Good Hitting.
