The award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps by showing care and compassion for others and this is the second year it is being held in New South Wales.
Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation Gabi Hollows Fred Hollows used to say that the basic attribute of mankind was our ability to look after each other.
“The Fred Hollows Humanity Award recognises students in NSW who have reflected this value in their own lives,” she said.
Annie and Cleo have both been nominated for the award following their efforts to help families fleeing domestic violence.
The pair organised a ‘Purple Day’ earlier in the month where students donated a gold coin to wear purple to school and brought in specific toiletries to be included in care packs distributed by The Salvation Army to people in need.
Cleo was nominated by family friend Kathleen Wotton who said Cleo has become very aware of domestic violence and situations people face when being forced to leave their home with nothing but the clothes on their back.
“I’m very proud of her efforts and the passion she has found to help make a difference for those less fortunate.”
Annie was nominated by her grandmother Jean Shannon who said the 12-year-old has a highly developed social conscience and wants to be a human rights lawyer so she help resolve issues around domestic violence, refugees and Indigenous Australians.
“Annie cares about the situation of the Syrian refugees, and thinks Australia should do more. She is an intelligent, caring and joyful young woman, and her optimism and caring nature give great hope for the future of Australia In the hands of this generation. Annie’s optimism and caring nature never change.”
Parents, teachers and members of the community are all encouraged to nominate a Year 6 student they know who is making a difference in their community. Nominations close on August 21.
All nominees will be recognised at a ceremony at NSW Parliament House on Monday, September 5, where the winner will be announced.
