Footrot outbreak
REPORTSof a serious outbreak of virulent footrot strain identified on 15 properties in districts to our near west has caused concern across the state.
Warm, wet conditions are now ideal for footrot spread and out district should experience similar conditions during September and beyond.
Bought-in sheep must be segregated from home flocks for as long as possible as a sensible biosecurity measure.
We should treat all introduced livestock as suspect, segregate them for as long as possible and carefully check animal health statements.
Buyer beware has seldom been so important.
Keep tabs on tags
THE sudden decision to mandate radio frequency identification (RFID) sheep tags for sheep and farmed goats across Victoria is being seen as a break away from mob identification and printed tags for tracing identification.
The electronic tags are 80c each (government subsidised) and 28c for a visual tag in Victoria while now compulsory RF tags are $1.43 and 40c for visuals in our state.
Our state supports continuation of the present mob-based method of identification.
However, many producers are concerned at recent NSW Government decisions on dog racing and forced council amalgamations and we hope that Nationals members will support livestock producers on the issue of sheep tag identification schemes.
Old timer
A FAMILY member recently drove past the Strathmore Manor building in Russell Street and remarked to his 20-year-old passenger: ”My dad was born there when it was a private hospital.”
The passenger read the date on the front of the building and queried: “In 1847?”

Laugh lines
THE haughty lady asked the milk vendor: “Is this milk fresh?” She was told: “Lady, two hours ago this milk was grass.”
A STUDENT in first class asked: “If milk comes from cows, where does Red Bull come from?”
AT the Pearly Gates, St Peter asked three men why they had died with such huge smiles on their faces. George said he and his wife had been on a second honeymoon when he died suddenly. Hector said he’d backed a 100-1 winner at Menangle and died smiling. Pat said he’d been struck by lightning “but I smiled broadly cause I thought is was a camera flash”. (thanks MR)
