The Lions’ under-13 and under-15 sides will contest their respective grand finals at Dubbo’s Caltex Oval on Saturday and both are going into the game in red-hot form.
The younger of the sides trumped Dubbo Kangaroos Blue for the first time all season in their major semi-final a fortnight ago, winning 17-7, while the under-15 unit produced a stunning performance to down cross-city rivals Orange Emus 33-7 in last weekend’s preliminary final.
They’ll play Dubbo Blue and Narromine in their respective deciders, and in an attempt to fire the sides up former Wallaby James Grant spoke to the combined group during the week.
He shared his wisdom and spoke of how to prepare for and what to expect in games of this magnitude, along with providing some inspiring sentiments too.
The sides will be led around by their respective representative players, although under-15 coach Deryck Ward said the teams’ opposition shouldn’t expect those guns to be the Lions’ only threats.
Far from it in fact, both sides boast impressive levels of talent and ability across the board.
Both sides finished second on the table after their respective regular seasons and have shared the spoils with their grand final opponents.
The under-13 Lions were beaten by Dubbo during the regular season – so was everyone else, the side went through undefeated – but won the major semi-final, while the under-15 side trumped Narromine at Pride Park during the round games but lost the major playoff two weeks ago.
That loss is fueling the fire in the under-15 Lions’ bellies.
Interestingly, both sides are coached by former Lions guns, who have instilled the traditional Orange City pride in the youngsters.
The younger unit is coached by Tim West and John Nunn, both of whom played more than 100 senior games for the Lions while the under-15 side is coached by Ward along with Pat McDonald.
The games kick off at 9.30am and 11am, respectively.
The under-17 grand final will feature Dubbo Blue and the Mudgee Wombats, and kicks off at 12.30pm.
