Bloomfield coach Steve Morgan summed up Saturday’s Group 10 under-16 grand final best after CYMS won a cracking derby decider 20-4 against the Tigers.
A nigh on complete performance from the green and golds secured the club its fourth premiership on the day at Glen Willow, with a Nathan Swain-led CYMS too good in the main game.
But Morgan’s outfit dug deep at the end, the Tigers scoring the final try through hooker Jarrod Morgan to end their junior careers on a bright-ish note.
Both teams came together at the end of the game, showing the promising future rugby league has in the colour city.
“The better team won today,” Morgan said.
“We unfortunately made too many errors and they played pretty well. We didn’t capatilise on a couple of chances early and then got on a roll after that and dominated the game.
“Hats off to my boys though, i’m proud as buggery of them.
“Hopefully now boys form both teams will move on to their senior teams and do them proud, because they’ve certainly done their junior clubs proud.”
CYMS co-coach Cam Jones was elated after the win, tries to Cody Ramsey, Lincoln Monk, Nathan Swain and William Cannon setting up a match-winning, 20-0 lead.
It’s the side’s first win at a junior rugby league level, sending Jones and co-coach Matt Morris off as winners and propelling the playing group into senior footy as a seriously dangerous unit.
“We know how good (Bloomfield) are so we had to start strong and we kept it up for the whole game, very proud of them, “Jones said.
“The plan was just to win. We knew if we kept doing what we’ve been doing and not let the occasion get the better of us we’d be right.”
The match was won through the middle of the field, with CYMS’ big men Will Cusack and skipper Jack Braithwaitte relentless in bending the Bloomfield defensive line backwards.
On the back of that, super-impressive fullback Ramsey made mince meat of the Tigers in the first 30 minutes.
For the Tigers, Elijah Smyth was close to best of field in a losing team, such was his impact down the Bloomfield right edge.
While their own custodian, Dion Jones, has some classy touches when he was injected into the play.
But Jones reserved special mention for NSW Country centre Tyrone Harrison.
“Tyrone is in country and he wasn’t meant to be playing, he has been injuried, boys like him came into the team at the last second, and those sort of things, doing it for your teammates,” he said.
Swain was deemed man of the match while Ramsey won the CYMS seniors MVP.
