The missing 51-year-old Silvan man was spotted by a member of the public walking along the side of Greta Road, Wangaratta Airport, about 5.50pm Saturday evening.

Police picked him up in a divisional van half and hour later and brought him back to Wangaratta Police Station.

​They walked Mr Tromp into the station through the front doors and were met later by his brother, Ken, and another family member.

Four hours later, he was finally released into the care of his family.

Police confirmed Mr Tromp had been cleared by a medical assessor from Albury Wodonga Health and was safe and well.

He did not need to be taken to hospital.

A smiling Ken Tromp earlier told media outside the police station “everything is going really well”, but the family did not want to make any further comment.

It is still unknown why Mr Tromp became paranoid and delusional, choosing to flee his home and later his own family members.

He had not been spotted in three days since he abandoned his car and ran into Merriwa Park on Wednesday.

The son of Mr Tromp said it would truly be a happy Father's Day after his dad was found.

Mitchell Tromp, at home in Silvan, thanked "everyone so much" for keeping an eye out for his dad.

"This is the best news that could ever happen," he said.

His best friend, who is with him, added; "and a happy Father's Day".

"Yeah, Happy Father's Day," Mitchell said, laughing.

Mitchell, 25, said his father was "fine" and walked into the police station with police.

It is believed he is dehydrated, but physically OK.

Despite speculation the family suffered a shared delusional disorder before and during their "technology free" road trip, son Mitchell, 25, told Fairfax Media there were no recent or current psychological diagnoses in his family.

Mr Tromp and his 53-year-old wife Jacoba were reported missing in Goulburn on Tuesday after they were separated from their adult children during a family trip to Jenolan Caves, west of Blue Mountains.

The couple was spotted together at a Wangaratta shopping centre on Wednesday, but were not in good mental health and split up due to their paranoia.

The next sighting came when a Wangaratta couple reported the Tromp’s grey Peugeot station wagon following them around the streets about 10pm Wednesday.

When they stopped in Ely Street, they saw Mr Tromp get out of the car, run past Christopher Robin Kindergarten and into Merriwa Park.

Police were earlier investigating three break-ins on Thursday at a horse club, a football club and the general store around Milawa and Oxley.

The back door had been pushed open at each and food was taken from one.

It is not known if Mr Tromp was responsible and may have been trying to get supplies, but his family were hopeful it was him.
