Social Bowls: Rink winners for the Tuesday Afternoon Social Competition were the Tony Hogan and John Banning combination with a slim 19-15 win over Kevin Howard and Gus Thurgood. The Howard team took first points with a one but the response from the Hogan was a three to announce their intentions early. A run of four end wins had the Hogan team leading 6-1 going into the sixth end when the Howard team bounced back with a four to trail by just the one shot. A three shot win in the eighth end gave the Howard team the lead at 8-7 and they continued to score over the next two ends to extend their lead to 11-7 going into the 11th end.
The Hogan team regrouped and scored eight unanswered points over the next six ends to take control of the match to lead 15-11 by the time the Howard team scored again in the 17th end with a two. This was immediately countered with a two by the Hogan team and they scored a further two points on the last end to close out the match, but a great game all round.
Frank Farrell and Bob Bembrick scored a one shot 21-20 win over Paul Kennedy and Ian Dews on rink four after jumping from the blocks with a two shot win which was countered by the Kennedy team with a one. By the time the Kennedy team scored again in the sixth end, the Farrell team had their lead out to 6-1 and the Kennedy team didn’t score again until the 12th end, by which time the Farrell team had the lead 17-3.
Resembled a bowling masterclass, the Kennedy team then set about hauling back the score line with a four shot win in the 15th end followed by four single end wins to be sitting behind at 18-13 going into the 20th end when the Farrell team scored another two shot end win. From the 21st to the 25th ends, the Kennedy team scored seven unanswered points to force a tiebreak end which was won by the Farrell team with a “get out of jail” one shot win.
On rink one, Peter Naylor, Ron McGarry and Tony McNamara scored a come from behind 21-17 win over John Finlay, Glen Field and Butch Stevens. The Finlay team scored first points and had the lead at 11-1 going into the ninth end and looked comfortable runners. The Naylor team scored a one then a two in the ninth and 10th ends, but were not back on the card until the 13th end with just the single shot to trail the Finlay team 14-6 going into the 14th end.
Collecting yet another single shot in the 14th end to lead 15-6, the Finlay team looked to have the match in their keeping, but then the Naylor team woke up. With a run of one, four and one, the Naylor team were within three shots of the lead at 15-12 down and despite the Finlay team scoring a two in the 18th end, the Naylor team came back with a four in the 19th end, a two in the 20th end and a three in the 21st end to take the match by four shots.
The final Tuesday match, saw Terry Burke, Bruce Parr and Darryl Bellamy combination score a 19-16 win over Terry Clark, Jim Fogarty and Jim Clark after the Clark team lead 7-0 going into the sixth end when the Burke team scored their first points with a single shot. The Burke team could only manage to score the odd single shot in the eighth, the ninth and the 13th ends to be trailing the Clark team 12-4 going into the 14th end.
From here, however the Burke team found their length scoring a two, four, three combination over the next three ends, they were sitting just the one shot behind the Clark team at 12-13 going into the 17th end and were now contenders. The Clark team scored a one then a three in the 17th and 18th ends to extend their lead to 16-13, but the Burke team came back at them with a run of three, one and two to take the match by three shots. Great bowls all round.
Rain, which led to floods across Bathurst and surrounding areas, washed out the Saturday afternoon competition at Majellan, forcing the cancellation of the Father’s Day social mixed tournament.
Bowlers are again reminded that nominations are up for the Club Mixed Triples September 11 and nominations for the Club Major/Minor Pairs are also on the Notice Board. Details for the Turnaround Triples weekend of October 22-23 have now been posted and we have been advised that nine teams have already been nominated from the Sydney based Birrong Bowling Club.
Pennants in 2017: Expressions of interest have now been posted on the Notice Board and players should nominate early to enable qualifying matches to be organised if necessary.
That’s it for another week, as Franklin P Jones once wisely said, “One advantage of talking to yourself is that you know at least somebody’s listening”
Bathurst City Bowls
Monday, September 5: On a magnificent sunny spring afternoon, twenty bowlers nominated to play five games of social pairs at the city. All bowling at the city last week was cancelled due to the weather conditions.
Game one: By scoring three shots, Skipper Allan Clark, Majellan and Ian Hereford were just down 8-9 after the six end against Skpper Denis Oxley and Kevin Miller, who then led 19-14 after the 15th end. By Scoring ten shots to four shots, Oxley and Miller were successful, 29-18 over Clark and Hereford after the 21st end.
Game two: On the eighth end, Skipper Merie Stephens, Majellan and Phil Murray scored one shot to level the scores at five shots all with Skipper Norm Hayes and Barry McPherson, who were leading 16 shots to eight shots after the 15th end. Finally easily winning 25-12 after the 21st end over Stephens and Murray.
Game three: As in all sporting games, practice is very essential, (especially with lawn bowling if you wish to be very competitive) Skipper Ray Noonan and John McDonagh combined exceptionally well as get were leading 12 shots to three shots after the seventh end over Skipper Peter Floyd and Jeff Larsen (who were both back after a spell from bowls). Noonan and McDonagh, then led 22-5 after the 14th end finally winning over Floyd and Larsen after the 21st end.
Game four: After the eighth end, Skipper Ron Cambey and Hamish McKay were leading ten shots to six shots over Skipper Ian Cunningham and John Marin who scored 14 shots to one shot to lead 20 shots to 11 shots after the 13th end. Camber and McKay then scored four shots to five shots to be down 15-25 after the 18th end. Both teams each scored four shots with Cunningham and Martin victorious 29-19 over Cambey and McKay after the 21st end.
Game five: This game between three old railway footballers and Magellan’s Elizabeth Bull, appears to have been played in two sections as Skipper Bob Heffernan and Elizabeth Bull combined extremely well to lead 20 shots to 11 shots after the 12th end. Both leads played brilliantly as with their final two bowls on the 13th end. Each lead bowler drew the shot, only to have their shot taken by the other lead bowler. Bull had the final bowl, she drew the shot for the Skipper, Bob Heffernan to lead 21-11. Skipper Jim Grives and Grahame Spurway then combined exceptionally well as they were down 15-23 after the 16th end but finished the best by winning the final five consecutive ends just going down 22-23 to Heffernan and Bull in a great game of lan bowls. Gives and Spurway won 12 of the 21 ends.
