Sandown marks the third of five rounds in the newly-established series and gives Gulson another chance to make an impression against a strong crop of opponents.
Following his trip to Victoria Gulson will get to take on Mount Panorama during Bathurst 1000 weekend for his first ever crack on his home circuit.
Gulson will come into Sandown on the back of his first ever top 10 finish in the series, which he picked up in the second race of last round’s action at Sydney Motorsport Park.
He’s loved every minute of his first taste in a nation-wide series.
“We started the series back at Winton in May. I decided I wanted to try and race the full season. I had wanted to try and get myself into a national series for a while,” he said.
“I’d travelled to do some stuff with the GT Academy before but I was unsuccessful there. This was then an opportunity that came about and I took it.”
It wasn’t the smoothest start to the series for the Bathurst driver.
“We had some teething issues at Winton. We finished 16th in the first race but had some overheating problems in the second and that put us back to 25th. Then in the last race we had a DNF after contact,” he said.
“At Eastern Creek we turned it around with a 10th [in race two] and then got an 11th for the final race.
“I’ve definitely set myself some goals now for the rest of the year. It was great to get that top 10 at Eastern Creek and hopeful I can find another one. If I could crack a top five at Bathurst then that would be amazing.”
The series is set to run for three years, pitting up to five selected professional drivers against a field of over 35 amateur drivers.
The 86 car itself is a joint development effort from Toyota and Subaru, first released in 2012.
Gulson said the two-door, rear wheel drive sports car has been a blast to work with.
“It’s a great car to chuck around and have a lot of fun in,” he said.
”It’s been great to be working on the car and building it myself. It’s a good feeling to turn up to the race knowing you’ve put in that hard work.”
Gulson journeys to Sandown currently ranked 17th in the championship standings out of 41 competitors.
