Social Bowls: Tuesday Afternoon Social Competition rink winners this week were Frank Farrell and Greg Quartly-Scott with a 31-16 win over Paul Kennedy and Gus Thurgood after winning 12 of the 21 ends played. The Kennedy team scored first points but the Farrell team came back with a one, two and five shot combination that gave them the lead 8-3 going into the sixth end. From there they were never headed scoring 13 shots in the last six ends.
Kevin Howard, Barry Quigley and Bob Bembrick scored another significant 25-10 win in their match against Terry Clark, Barry Quigley and Peter Stueckradt, with the Howard team scoring a six then two to get proceedings underway. The Clark team snuck into double figures with a three shot win in the 20th end, but they were not able to match the fire power of the Howard team.
Tony McNamara and Jim Clark scored a much closer 21-19 win over Darryl Bellamy and Ron McGarry on rink nine The McNamara team jumped first with a two and held the lead from then on with the Bellamy team reaching double figures in the 15th end, but by this time the McNamara team had the lead at 20-10. Despite winning six of the final seven ends, the Bellamy team ran out of ends to claw back the McNamara team score and went down by just two shots.
Tony Hogan, Keith Pender and Ian Dews scored an 18-13 win over Allan Clark, Ian Warren and Bruce Parr with the Clark team almost causing an upset. The Hogan team jumped from the blocks with a two and one and the Clark team responded with a two. The Hogan team then set about steadily building a lead until the 17th end when the Clark team pulled a four shot win to even the match and then scored a one to take the lead for the first time. This prompted a four shot response from the Hogan team followed by two single shot end wins to give them the match by five.
Saturday’s miserable weather encouraged just the one rain shortened game with Darryl Bellamy and Tony Press scoring a 17-13 win over Terry Clark and Allan Clark with the scores even on four occasions during the 18 end match. The Bellamy team scored first points but in a close encounter, the Clark brother kept coming back until the last two ends when the Bellamy team scored a three and a one at a crucial stage to take the win in wet and freezing conditions.
Club Championships and Tournaments: In a battle of the Titans over 44 ends and in the worst possible conditions, Frank Farrell took a 31-29 win over Jim Fry in the first round of the 2016 Minor Singles Championships on Saturday. Fry jumped early and was leading 7-0 before Farrell scored a three on the sixth end. By the 11th end it was all even at eight all. In the 14th end it was ten all, in the 22nd end it was 15 all and from here it looked like Fry had the upper hand just leading for the next 20 ends. But experience and tenacity payed off for Farrell who won the 43rd end to even the match again at 29 all, then scored another two in the 44th end to reach the magical 31 points to win the match by just two shots. Great bowls all round.
Still on miserable Saturday and Tony Hogan, Greg Quartly-Scott and Bob Jenkins travelled to Oberon RSL Bowling Club for this year’s Karl Brawn Memorial Day against a mixed array of 10 teams from all over the District. The Majellan trio won both morning and afternoon games scoring convincingly in both games to notch up the Tournament win in terrible playing conditions. The challenge for Oberon now is getting the double barrel names on the trophy but a great day all round with 10 teams from across the District.
Weather on Sunday was the perfect contrast to Saturday for the Majellan Mixed Triple Tournament with 10 teams competing with the winners on game wins and aggregate the Majellan team of Tony McNamara, Kerry Connors and Merle Stephens. They collected a 13 point margin win in their morning match and an 18 point margin win in the afternoon to give them the overall Tournament win on 32 points. In an all Majellan podium. second place went to the Huender team with 12 and six for an 18 shot aggregate and in third place was the Clark team with five and five with a ten shot aggregate. Thanks to Betsey Thornberry and the Majellan Catering Team for providing a great lunch for the players and well done to all players.
Bowlers should be aware that a number of nomination sheets are on the notice board for upcoming events including the Club Major/Minor Pairs, the Turnaround Triples weekend to be held on October 22-23 with some great prizes on offer, and nomination sheets for the 2017 Pennants Teams. A return visit from Wallerawang Bowling Club has been scheduled for the December 4 and teams are also being called for that tournament.
At Majellan Bowling Club, volunteer Club members undertake all tasks associated with green maintenance and Geoff Densmore and his team are to be congratulated for presenting players with two greens of outstanding condition despite one of the wettest Winters on record in Bathurst. The greens are a credit to the skill and determination of the team and with Craig McIntosh running the Club Functions area and President Darryl Bellamy overseeing the Club’s administration, Majellan Bowling Club is in great hands. Thank you to all the volunteers who keep Majellan Bowling Club performing and succeeding as it is. If you’re not part of the Majellan team why not come down to the Club and ask about joining up, it may be the best decision of your life.
That’s it for another week readers and as Confucius once said, “Education breeds confidence, confidence breeds hope and hope breeds peace.”
