Year seven student Maya McGrath achieved first place in NSW and seventh overall nationally by scoring 94 per cent on her history examination.
Kelso High Campus entered 50 students, from years seven and nine, in this year’s history competition, and Maya received a high distinction.
Three other Kelso students – Gabrielle Forshaw, Katelyn Henderson and Kobi Salway – all received distinctions.
Maya said the news was a bit of shock.
“I was quite happy when I first heard I won, but I didn’t expect I would,” she said.
A trip to England three years ago may have set the foundations for Maya’s love of history.
“There was not much to do [in England], so I started reading books,” she said.
“I kept reading a bunch of history when I got back and enjoyed it very much.”
Maya said her favourite historical topic is Ancient Rome.
Human society and its environment (HSIE) head teacher Sharon Mendes said she was delighted for Maya.
“We’re extremely proud of her and happy she has done so well,” Ms Mendes said.
“A result like this normally goes to a Sydney student, so it’s even better that it went to a regional area.
“This is probably the best Kelso High has ever done across the board.”
Although Ms Mendes has only been at Kelso High for two years now, she believes the award is the best the HSIE faculty has achieved.
