As many as 200 golfers will flood Bathurst for the annual stroke event come March next year, the first time the city has hosted the Golf NSW event.
Constable revealed the coup on Monday, with the Golf NSW pitching the championship to Bathurst Regional Council during recent talks surrounding water conservation at the Bathurst course.
The senior championships, which is for golfers aged 55 and over, is the main lure for council, with the regional qualifying stage for the 2017 NSW Open to be staged in Bathurst later in 2017 as well.
“It’s fantastic. We’re really appreciative of the support we’ve received from council,” Constable said, adding the calibre of golfer on show for the senior championship is set to be outstanding.
“Absolutely. A lot of the golfers competing are top of the tree; guys that have been really strong at an amateur level and can still hold a handicap.
“The NSW Open qualifying round is part of the package that was pitched to council.”
Constable said the NSW Seniors Championship, at this point in time, will be in Bathurst for 2017 only.
“That’s at this stage, council has agreed to a one-year thing ... but if all goes well and we host a great tournament it could lead to a more long-term partnership,” he added.
The 54-hole tournament will run over four days, with a rest day in the middle enabling golfers from across NSW to take in Bathurst and its surrounds.
Constable said that in itself will ensure the agreement is a worthwhile one for the city.
“All of these golfers will come to Bathurst, stay in town, eat in town … it’s a great thing and I think council understands that,” he said.
Dates for both the seniors championship and the NSW Open regional qualifying are still to be confirmed.
