It is a record which has so far stood the test of time and according to Bev Brock, former partner of the late driving star, it could remain a record well into the future.
“I don’t think it’s [winning] an easy thing to do because it is such an equal, competitive field these days,” she said.
“Back in those times it was far more driver orientated, they were responsible for setting up the car, a lot of the engineering and so forth. There could be, and was, a big difference between the various teams and drivers.
“Now with the use of technology – there’s very little between first and 20th, so it’s the luck of the game. Now it’s a very different ball game and I think it’s harder for people.”
Of the current Supercars drivers, Craig Lowndes boasts the most Bathurst 1000 victories with six.
Lowndes, who will start this year’s Bathurst 1000 as the defending champion, has often been compared to Peter Brock. Bev Brock admits if anyone is to break Peter’s record, she hopes it will be him.
“Craig is obviously the one, if it was going to happen I would dearly love to see Craig do it,” Bev Brock said.
“Craig stands apart and in many, many ways he is like Peter, that sets him apart from the rest. When Peter was giving out his wisdom to anybody who’d listen, Craig was probably the one who listened the most.
“I certainly barrack for Craig quietly … I would like to see him beat Peter’s record.”
