Dana Courtney ($17.40) beat her more fancied kennel mate Dana Scar ($7.30) to the finish line by two and a quarter lengths.
Express Cash ($3.70) was a neck further back in third.
“Her run at Canberra wasn’t too bad last week. She’s always had the ability but hasn’t produced it yet. Today though she went alright,” McDonald said of his winner.
“She can be a ratbag and tries to do everything at a million miles an hour. She came out well today and she was boxed better too. She likes to come from out wide so that helped.”
McDonald’s third runner in the race, Dana Makin, got out strongest but got shuffled back along the rail after contact.
Dana Courtney got across strongly from box seven while widest starter Express Cash was threatening to make a move.
That move was brought to a halt when he ran into Dana Scar coming into the back straight.
From that point on the positions stayed as they were, with Spring Gun x Good Thing runner taking her second career win in a time of 26.51 seconds.
Dana Makin was fourth.
