Three of Eglinton’s young guns Matt D’Eath, Matt Tree and Jacob Bicanic stole the show in this year’s Grand Final at the Eglinton complex last Saturday. Team Mercury led by captain Bryan Reiri played champagne tennis in front of a very vocal crowd. D Eath was in brilliant form winning all of his four sets in brilliant fashion.

Matt was given strict instructions by his coach John Bullock to go for your shots and not to panic. Well it sure did work as D Eath carved up his opponents with his sensational court craft skills. It was a polished display of tennis from D Eath who was primed for the big occasion. Mercuries Jacob Bicanic one of Eglinton’s Tennis Academies top young guns looked to be in total control.
Bicanic was focused, committed and in full flight in all his four sets. Coached by head coach at the Eglinton tennis club Rod Schumacher, Bicanic was all ears when approached by his coach on his tips for the match.
Schumacher just gave him one word of advice for his star pupil, “BELIEVE”, he said. With Team Mercuries number two player Elio Bicanic out injured, Team Mercury captain Bryan Reiri believed it was up to another one of Eglinton’s top young guns Matt Tree to fill in and do the job required. Tree had big shoes to fill but Reiri insisted he was the man to steer the side to victory. Reiri instructed Tree to play your natural game and think big.
Team captain Bryan Reiri played his usual casual game which seemed to frustrate his opponents. Reiri served like a man inspired and blasted his opponents off the court with his bullet like forehand.
Mercuries, Dave Simpson was instrumental also in his sides memorable victory. Simpson played some very cagey tennis looking quite composed and in control. The winning captain of the grand final Bryan Reiri was over the moon at his teams great victory.
“We are the champions and don't let anyone else tell you that were not. My side played really super tennis today.” Reiri said.
There can be only one winner in finals. My father Sam told me when I was a junior, that to be a great winner you have to be a gracious loser, and that it was from losing captain of team Neptune Iron Lady Allyson Schumacher.
“We had our chances but just couldn't play the big points well enough. Team Mercury deserved there victory and were the better team on the day.” Schumacher said.
Club President Brian Dwyer would like to thank all the players who participated in this years winter competition.
President Dwyer also wanted to remind all players the next competition begins October 8. Teams will be published next edition. Good Hitting.
