Social Bowls: In a repeat of last week’s rink win in the Tuesday Afternoon Social Competition, Noel Witney and Jim Clark scored a 37-11 win over Darryl Whitton and Terry Clark, who struggled to reach double figures in the 14th end with a four. The Whitney team scored on 14 of the 21 ends played and were sitting 17-11 in the 15th end before unleashing a stinging final run of six end wins for 20 shots, to win by a margin of 26.
Darrel Bellamy, Ron McGarry and Bob Bembrick scored a five margin 27-22 win over John Hobson, Bruce Parr and Kevin Howard on rink four after being behind in the early running. Taking the lead in the sixth end during a strong run of 11 unanswered shots, the Bellamy team maintained a more consistent scoring percentage through the game despite the Hobson team collecting a five shot win in the ninth to get within four shots of the Bellamy team.
Another huge margin win of 29-9 was scored by the Tony Hogan, Darryl Shurmer and Barry Quigley combination on rink three against Paul Kennedy, Ian Dews and Garry Edwards. The Hogan team jumped from the blocks with a two and they held the lead throughout the 19 end match, scoring on 12 ends including an eight and a four shot end win to dominate the card.
Allan Clark and Greg Quartly-Scott scored a very comfortable 27-18 win over Trevor Pallister and Frank Farrell after the Pallister team collected first points with a one which was immediately countered with a three from the Clark team. The Pallister team then bounced back with their own three shot win in the next end to make a match of early running. However the Clark team dominated the scoring from the fourth end to lead from there to the finish line.
Another strong field was on hand for the Saturday Social Competition with Glen Urza, Terry Clark and Darrel Bellamy taking the daily rink win and the game at 23-15 against Mick McDonald, John Banning and Kevin Howard. In a game that saw the lead change six times, the game was eventually won by the Urza team in the 17th end with a seven shot end win to put them two shots in front, and then in the 20th end, after they had let the McDonald team just back into the lead, the Urza team scored a five shot end win to steal the lead back just one end from the finish.
It was a much closer affair on rink six with the Paul Kennedy, Mick Redfern and Barry O’Keefe combination prevailing 21-19 over Allan Clark, Ron Worth and Barry O’Keefe. The Clark team showed their hand early with a four shot win in the first and third ends to lead 8-1 going into the fourth end. But a 13-8 end win percentage enabled the Kennedy team to claw back the Clark team’s early enthusiasm, to have the match even in the 20th end and two points in front and winners in the final end.
Tony Urza, Ted Crouch and Terry Burke put a stop to the recent run by Noel Witney, Trevor Pallister and Bob Bembrick with a 25-15 win on rink five. The Witney team held the lead for the first six ends and kept fighting but a five end run of 10 shots from the 13th to the 17th end by the Urza team, which gave them a 24-12 lead going into the 18th end, shattered the Witney team. Despite collecting three more end wins it was not enough and the Urza team ran out 10 shot winners.
Ron Harvey, Barry Quigley and Darryl Shurmer scored a “from the front” 24-15 win over Tony McNamara, Tony Press and Allan North on rink four. Scoring a one and a two in the first two ends to take the early lead and winning 13 of the 21 ends played, the Harvey team win was conclusive with the five shot win in the 18th end the match sealer.
Club Championships: Just the one Minor Singles match was played at Majellan this week with David Josh taking a 31-26 win over Frank Farrell with Gus Thurgood as marker. In a dominant performance, Josh jumped with a one then two in the first two ends and followed up with a four in the fourth end then a one to lead 8-1 going into the sixth end and from here he was never headed. Winning 18 of the 31 ends played, Josh took control of the mat from the outset and was reluctant to let it go with Farrell reaching double figures in the 16th end.
The recent win by Greg Quartly-Scott in the first round of the Rookie of the Year competition saw him go on to Narromine over the weekend along, with his Pairs partner Ron McGarry, but unfortunately their early success was not able to be repeated and they were knocked out of the competition. Their opponents had a little more experience in the game but both players represented the Majellan Club with distinction. The Tournament structure also gives them an opportunity to contest next year’s competition so their best games may still be ahead of them.
Players are advised that the draw for the Major/Minor Pairs has been completed and is on the Notice Board with a first round play by date of November 6 and second round by the November 27. The Tuesday Social Competition on the November 1 will be a Melbourne Cup Gala Day with barbeque lunch commencing at 11.45am followed by bowls, sweeps and activities with play paused for the big race. The Turnaround Triples Tournament will be held on the October 22-23 with nominations being received now for this weekend long and very lucrative event.
That’s it for another week readers and take heart, “You’ll never be as lazy as whoever named the fireplace.”
