Held at the St Brigid’s Hall with NSW Waratahs gun Jed Holloway as the guest speaker, Kinscher capped a stunning season on the side of the Roos scrum during the 2016 Blowes Clothing Cup season with the best player award.
But the biggest cheer of the night was saved for the Shaun McHugh, who took home the coveted Peter Davis Memorial Trophy.
Peter Davis was a key member of the Dubbo Kangaroos team to win the Central West Rugby Union title in 1987, the first Roos side to win it outright after the 1975 team was named joint premiers with Orange Emus.
A six-foot-five second-rower who had the ball skills of a five-eighth, Davis played first grade with Parramatta and was selected for Sydney Colts prior to his transfer to Dubbo in the Police Force.
He was named in the Dubbo Rugby Club team of the century in 1999, sadly passing away in 2001 after a long illness. He was just 37.
Shaun McHugh is a well recognised player and was deserving of the trophy ... he lives and breathes those qualities on and off the field.
- Roos secretary Jason Dearmer
A number of Davis’ closest friends decided it would be fitting to have an award named in his memory.
Remembered for more than just his playing ability, Davis lived his life like he played football; always playing by the rules, accepting the referee’s decisions and never giving up.
His honesty made Davis an extremely popular member of both the rugby and wider communities.
Compassion was another Peter Davis trait – he was a true sportsman in all facets of his life.
They’re characteristics the club uses to award the annual winner, McHugh an easy choise for the 2016 award.
“Shaun McHugh is a well recognised player throughout the Central West and was deserving of the trophy as he lives and breathes those qualities on and off the field,” Roos secretary Jason Dearmer said.
In the other perpetual awards, John Korff won the Harry Roberts Trophy, awarded to the person who inspires others with his or her work ethic, commitment and passion for the Dubbo Rugby Club.
Supporter of the Year was Christine Bartimote, the most dedicated player Luke McConachie, rookie of the year Josh Exner and club person of the year Mark Bartimote.
Jake Walton took out the colts best and fairest award, while Kyper Yap (third grade), Reuben Williams (second grade) and Kinscher (first grade) took out the same award for their respective grades.
