Behind her is most of the continent and in front of her is just a couple of hundred kilometres before she completes her trek from North Beach, Perth to Bondi Beach, Sydney.
The 72-year-old is making the epic trek to support Free The Bears, an organisation which wants to end the exploitation of the animals.
Bathurst should be a doddle for Mrs Hegarty, who was followed by a dingo at one stage during her time on the Nullarbor, prompting a passing truck driver to warn her husband and support driver John, who was a little way down the road.
“I wasn’t concerned,” Mrs Hegarty said of her encounter with the wild dog. “I was happy with the company.”
Mrs Hegarty has seen the Nullarbor and Eyre Highway through South Australia and Western Australia awash with green thanks to the recent wet months.
And with the finish line in sight, her feelings are mixed.
“I sort of feel that this is my life now – on the road,” she said. “I’ve loved it, really.”
