Saturday, October1
Bowlers, bowlers, bowlers, where art thou, bowlers? On Saturday morning, the weather didn't appear to be very kind to our bowlers, but as it happens on many, many times by the starting time the weather has cleared and all was set for a wonderful afternoon for Lawn Bowling at the City.
Only six dedicated club bowlers nominated to play a game of social triples. This game was a very unique game of lawn bowls , as there were four Club Presidents (one present and three past Presidents) playing along with two of the St Patrick's Club legends (Hockey and Rugby league) in this game .
Game 1: Beginning extremely well, Skip Garry Hotham, Dennis Harvey and Ron Hollebone, after the fourth end, were leading five shots to one over Skip Bryan Bromfield, Jim Grives and Ray Noonan. On the eighth end, team Hotham scored a handy five shots to lead 11-3 shots. Then, they were leading 19-8 after the 16th end. Team Bromfield fought back courageously and scored 8-2 shots, but team Hotham finally won a great game of lawn bowls 21-16, after the 21st end. Once again, Ron Hollebone with a brilliant game of lead bowling, proved he was still the best lead in our great bowling club. Also, Garry Hotham scored the necessary ‘skips’ shots, when required to do so on numerous times during the game. All in all, each bowler had their moments of glory during this outstanding game of lawn bowls.
2016 Club Triples: The semi-finals of the triples are set down for next Saturday, October 7. All bowlers are reminded of the strict "Play or Foreit " rule.
2016 Melbourne Cup Charity Day: On November 1, our Ladies and Men's Bowling Clubs will be holding their Annual Daffodil Cottage Charity Day mixed bowls competition. All Club members, their families and friends are most welcome to play or attend this great day,as a tasty lunch will be provided by the members of both Clubs.
2016 Bathurst City Carillon Fours Tournament: At present ,we have had a great response from teams ,who have nominated to play for the $10,000 prize money on offer for this years Tournament at the City. Only a few Teams have yet to pay their nomination fees and they are cordially invited to pay as soon as possible .
Monday Jackpot Bowls: Due to the Public Holiday last Monday, there was no Bowls played in the Jackpot and next Monday, October 9, the Jackpot prize will be still $200. All Bowlers are very welcomed to play in the Jackpot.
Daylight Savings
As the daylight Savings commenced last Sunday, October 2 and the weather should be a lot better for lawn bowls. All our Club members are encouraged to endeavour to play this great game of Lawn Bowls a little more frequently at the City, thus supporting our great Clubs, who support us, when we support them.
90th Birthday
Best wishes to Harry Roy King, who celebrated his 90th Birthday a couple of weeks ago. "Dick " was a very popular member of our great club and is a great Australian, who was a member of the Australian Occupying Army Force served in Japan after the World War two had finished. ‘Dick’ had a long, long distinguished career as a Volunteer Fireman with the Bathurst Fire Station. A Great Bathurstian, no doubt.
Best wishes to all our Club members and their families, who maybe ill.Get better soon.

Social Bowls
Rink winners for the Tuesday Social Bowls competition this week were the Garry Cameron, Ron McGarry and Frank Farrell combination with a 25-15 win over Darrel Bellamy, Peter Zylstra and Trevor Pallister team after trailing in the early ends to be down 10-1 to the Bellamy team in the sixth end.
The shock of that early slump seemed to inspire a revival that began in the seventh end with a two and by the 13th end, the Cameron team had the lead 13-12.
The Bellamy team replied with two in the 14th end but the Cameron team had the momentum and scored in all but one of the final ends to take the match.
A 22-20 win to the Noel Witney, Keith Pender and Greg Quartly-Scott team against Tony McNamara, Ian Dews and Derrick Huender was a last end recovery of monumental proportions. The McNamara team scored first and held the lead from the third end getting out to 17-6 in the 15th end and looking comfortable.
In the 16th end the Witney team scored a five, then a two followed by two to sit just two shots behind. The McNamara team scored three in the next two ends to lead 20-15 with one end to play when the Witney team scored a massive seven to steal the match by two.
A very close 21-19 win was secured by the Glen Urza, Ian Warren and Bob Bembrick team against Ron Harvey, Peter Martin and Jim Clark team, despite the scores being even in the fourth and the 20th ends.
The Urza team jumped first with a two and two but the Harvey team had the match tied up at 4 all by the fourth end.
The end wins went to the Urza team 12-9, but a run of eight by the Harvey team from the 17th to 19th ends almost gave them the win but they fell just short with the last two ends going to the Urza team.
Alan Clark, Bruce Parr and Terry Burke scored a comfortable 31-16 win over Paul Kennedy, Gus Thurgood and Kevin Howard, despite a late come back from the Kennedy team. Winning 12 ends to nine the Clark team dominated the game and led the game from start to finish.
Only one social game on Saturday with Terry Burke, Peter Zylstra and Trevor Pallister taking a 27-11 win over John Stephenson, Tony Press and Ron McGarry. The lead changed three times before the seventh end but from here the Burke team took control of the match and were never headed with their game punctuated with two four shot and two three shot end wins.
Two games of mixed pairs and one of mixed triples were played on the Monday Labour Day long weekend at Majellan Bowling Club followed by a barbeque lunch which was enjoyed by all.
Despite early rain and cold winds, players were rewarded for their patience with a fine afternoon, great bowls and social enjoyment.
Club Championships
A late card from the September 24 saw Daryl Whitton take a 31-26 win over Mick Tremain in a Minor Singles Championship match with Scott Chapman as Marker. Tremain began well leading 7-0 going into the fifth end when Whitton scored first points with a one then three.
Tremain came back again and had a lead of 15-4 before Whitton was back on the score sheet with a one in the 12th end by which time Tremain had a lead of 15-5.
An unanswered run of 12 points by Whitton from the 14th to the 19th end finally gave him the lead for the first time at 17-16 and he maintained the pressure for the remainder of the match to win by five shots.
Alan Clark and Greg Quartly-Scott got their Major/Minor Pairs competition off to a close but good start with a 16-14 win over Darrel Bellamy and Ted Crouch on Saturday, despite the Bellamy team threatening throughout the match.
The Clark team scored first but the Bellamy team led 6-4 going into the eighth end and by 8-5 going into the 11th end. The scores were even again in the 12th end at 8 all.
With a four in the 16th end and a two in the 17th end, the Clark team grabbed a five shot margin lead of 15-10 going into the 18th end and despite the Bellamy team fighting back to within two shots, the Clark team had done enough to claim the win.
A Titanic battle between Allan North and David Josh in the Minor Singles Championship saw the lead change six times through the match with Alan North finally prevailing 31-26 after 35 ends.
North scored first points with a three but Josh responded with a run of eight to lead 8-3 going into the sixth end when North scored with his own run of seven to lead 10-8 going into the 10th end and the battle was on.
A run of six over the next four ends by Josh had him in the lead 14-10 going into the 14th end, but a run of ten from the 19th to the 23rd end gave North the lead again 22-18 going into the 24th end. Josh had one last burst in him taking the lead 24-23 in the 29 end, but North came home stronger winning four of the final six ends to take the match by five shots.
Just a reminder that the Tuesday Social Competition on the November 1 will be a Melbourne Cup Mixed Gala Day with barbeque lunch commencing at 11.45 am followed by bowls, sweeps and activities with play paused for the big race.
We have a full card for the Turnaround Triples Tournament to be held on the October 22-23which should be a great event.
That’s it for another week readers and think about this Jerry Seinfeld quote, “What are they planting to grow a seedless watermelon?”
