Residents have responded to the use-it-or-lose-it warning for the service on the CityRail network, delighting those who have pushed for the initiative for years.
Each day more than 50 train travellers have turned out to catch the Bullet when it pulls out of the Bathurst Railway Station at 5.48am.
It’s a response that Bathurst MP Paul Toole yesterday described as full justification for his work with John Hollis and the team from Rail Action Bathurst in lobbying for the service to be introduced.
“We knew there was a feeling in the community that people did want a return daily rail service between Bathurst and Sydney,” he said.
“However, with this type of initiative you never really know what the response will be like until it becomes a reality.
“I know the Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian has been receiving daily reports on the train’s useage and is elated with the fact that upwards of 50 people are catching the Bathurst Bullet when it leaves here of a morning every day.”
Mr Toole said said the numbers were well beyond original patronage estimates.
“And I think that as word spreads about the service and how good it is, these numbers will only increase,” he said.
“First impressions really do count and anyone who was at the station last Sunday and used the service went away with a good feeling.
“The Endeavour carriages are comfortable, the time table is workable and, best of all, it is stopping at the destinations when it should and isn’t running late.”
Mr Toole said people have been asking him if they can book a seat on the Bullet.
“Because it’s a CityRail service that means you can’t pre-book, but the service is being continually monitored to ensure it can cope with demand,” he said.
“People shouldn’t be worried about getting a seat though. The Bullet has 178-seat capacity, so there’s plenty of room and at this point in time I can guarantee they will get a seat."
