Fitzpatrick, 14, who attends Carenne School, competed in the parathletics competition at the carnival under the T-20 classification, winning gold in the 100 and 200 metre finals in the 12-15 age group. 

After a computer results mix-up with the placing after the two timed final heats, with his final multi-disability standard times and percentages he was placed in the 200 metres, which he won by 0.61 seconds over Noah Negus from Marian Catholic School in Kenthurst.  

Negus was once again the unlucky second place finisher, as Fitzpatrick was 0.30 seconds faster than him.

Carenne school assistant principal Terry Neal said Fitzpatrick was a clear winner in both events. 

“He recorded an excellent and competitive time of 27.24 for the 200 metres and 12.80 for the 100 metres,” Neal said.

“Unfortunately he was not in the top three for his two other events he entered – long jump and 800 metres.

“As a result of his two first places, he has been selected to represent his state at the 2016 National All Schools Athletics Championships in Canberra in early December.

“He will be a key member of the para-athlete squad, with the NSW rep team.” 

Fitzpatrick scored a 3.46 metre jump in the boys’ long jump, finishing fifth. Nonetheless, it has been a great year in athletics for him so far.  

Fitzpatrick had success at the regional Combined High Schools (CHS) athletics trials in Dubbo and then later at the state CHS Athletics Carnival at Homebush held last term.

Conner Drewe, Fitzpatrick’s running partner, is another T-20 para-athlete from Carenne School who was expected to compete at Homebush last weekend, but was unable to compete after breaking his finger the day before at the Regional T-Ball carnival at Cowra. 

On top of his study, Fitzpatrick will begin some busy programs to prepare for his appearance at the athletic championships. 

“Lachlan will begin some serious training and fitness programs leading up to the December national championships,” Neal said. 

Fitzpatrick will strive to improve his speed and perhaps achieve a personal best in both the 100 and 200 metres races.

A good performance at the championships may also result in a chance for him to compete in the 4x100 metre relay for NSW as well.

Fitzpatrick and his family have been full of praise for Carenne School teacher Peta Sykes for her support at the carnival on the weekend and for the multiple businesses in Bathurst that have provided financial support to help Fitzpatrick get to the nationals.
