Noel Reardon, Grahame Haley, Peter Davis and former Bathurst player Darren Stocks starred for the NSW team that defeated Queensland in the gold medal match in the Over-50s Division Two final.
Davis said that it was the first time NSW and Queensland faced each other in the tournament.
“We had not played Queensland due to the state blackout, so we went through the pool stage undefeated,” Davis said.
The Blues were chasing the game early, after Queensland went 1-0 up and NSW were unlucky to equalise after missing out on a number of shots.
The Blues looked set for their first defeat of the tournament until a late attack from Davis set up a scoring opportunity, which Stocks did not waste.
With no extra time played, the match went straight into a shootout, in which NSW claimed victory.
Bathurst’s Paul Mellor, Brett Archer and Kevin Sherman all starred for NSW in their bronze medal victory in the Over-50s Division One play-off.
After a strong performance in the tournament, Sherman was selected to represent the Australian team in the Over-50s 2017 Trans Tasman Cup team.
Bathurst Souths player Chris Hanrahran also appeared in NSW’s defeat of Queensland in the Over-35s and local Alan Mostyn represented NSW in the state’s success over Queensland in the Over-60s.
