In what was beautiful conditions for baseball, the Phantoms beat last year’s grand finalist the Lizards 9-7 to start their campaign on a positive note.
The game was tight all the way with some crucial hitting from Bathurst’s Nathan Maxwell and Brad Simister, plus Aaron Bailey and Brendan Roach for the Lizards.
“I made two mistakes trying to close out the game, one with a fastball and one with the curve. The Phantoms didn’t miss and that was the difference,” Lizards coach and closing pitcher Peter Nunan said.
The second game saw competition debutants Orange Raiders go down to Cougars 9-4.
This Sunday sees the Phantoms up against the Raiders at 1.15pm.
