The Lithgow triathlete was able to see off a challenge from Jodie Martin to get her triathlon season off to an excellent start.
The pair traded the lead throughout the race but a strong run across the final 5km leg ensured that Watts would come away with the win.
Being the first week of the triathlon season in Bathurst, Watts wasn’t sure who her long course opposition was at first.
“It was a bit confusing with all the teams out there. On the bike I didn’t know that she had passed me. I was just thinking it was another team. I just kept pacing myself but realised ‘Wait, that’s my competitor’,” she said of Martin.

“I expected more from the bike because it's my better leg now. I felt good though for my first triathlon of the season. I hadn’t done a run in months so that was pretty hard.”
Watts will continue to split her time up evenly between triathlon and standalone cycling races this summer.
“I’ve got heaps of triathlons coming up. I’ve got state next year and I’ll be doing a lot of track events in cycling,” she said.
