This weekend’s Lifeline Central West Mega Book Fair might give book lovers a great opportunity to pick up a few more titles, but the event has a very serious message.
Lifeline executive officer Alex Ferguson said that all funds raised during the two-day event will go to support those in a crisis.
This year more then one million people will call Lifeline for help – many are lonely, some are depressed or are a victim in domestic or family violence, and some are suicidal.
Mr Ferguson said every cent raised from this weekend’s book fair will recruit and train crisis supporters to answer Lifeline’s 24-hour crisis number.
“There have been millions of dollars in crops lost,” Mr Ferguson said of farmers’ plight in areas like Forbes.
And, he said major events like this can cause people to question their future.
“The work we do is out in the community is to minimise mental health issues,” Mr Ferguson said.
“One of our challenges is to get people, especially males, to make that call [for help].
“It’s a challenge to get them to recognise [that] in some cases they need to talk.”
Mr Ferguson said this weekend’s book fair will have more than 22,000 books, along with at least 1200 DVDs.

All genres are catered for from westerns to novels, cookbooks, biographies and children’s books.
“Children’s books start from $1, other books range from $2 up to $10 for a beautiful art book,” Mr Ferguson said.
“They’re high quality and there’s a terrific range of authors.”
A recent donation to Lifeline of more than 1200 DVDs would appeal to ever movie lover, Mr Ferguson said.
“There’s the good old westerns with John Wayne, and also Hamlet and Heaven Can Wait,” he said.
DVDs starts at $3 each.
The fair is on October 29 and 30, and is open 8.30am-4pm on Saturday and 10am-2pm on Sunday at Bathurst Showground .
