Majellan Bowling Club
by Bob the Bowler
Social Bowls: A cold Bathurst day did not deter five rinks of bowlers at the Majellan for the Tuesday. Rink winners, Gus Thurgood and Peter Zylstra making the best of good greens with a 27-17 win over Ted Crouch and Bob Jenkins. Despite the Crouch team scoring first, the Thurgood team responded with a six end run that had them sitting 8-1 in the lead by the end of the seventh end.
The Crouch team scored just one before the Thurgood team won three in a row with two shots in each to lead 14-2 going into the 12th end. A three then four by the Crouch team in the next two ends gave them a sniff but the Thurgood team maintained the pressure and were never headed to win by ten shots.
Runner up prize went to the John Hobson and Tony Hogan team with a 31-17 win over Paul Kennedy and Frank Farrell. Once again the Kennedy team scored first but were then swamped by the Hogan team who scored a six, two and two run to lead 10-1 going into the fifth end. They scored a five and three on the sixth and seventh end to extend their lead to 18-2 at the end of the seventh and the game looked all done. The Kennedy team came back with a four on the eighth end and a three on the 13th and 18th ends but the damage was done early and the result was a fourteen shot loss.
Noel Witney, Jim Clark and Ian Warren scored a seven shot 21-14 win over Darrel Bellamy, Mick Redfern and Ken Hartwig, despite not scoring first points until the fourth end. The game was even at six all after the seventh end and eight all after the tenth. It was even again at 14 all after the 14th end, but from here the Witney team took control of the match scoring 11 unanswered shots over the next six ends to lead 21-12 going into the final two ends which were won by the Bellamy team.
Garry Cameron, Peter Stueckrat and Bob Bembrick scored a 24-15 win over Alan Clark, Barry O’Keefe and Greg Quartly-Scott after the Clark team jumped from the blocks with a three on the first end. With an eight shot run from end two to five, the Cameron team went to an 8-3 shot lead and in the seventh end scored a five to lead 13-4 going into the eighth end. Winning 12-9 ends overall the Cameron team simply outscored the Clark team and they topped it off with a three on the second last end for good measure.
The final game on Tuesday could not have been closer and in fact was decided by a coin toss. Trevor Pallister, Ian Dews and Ron McGarry scored a 20-19 win over Terry Burke, Bruce Parr and Bill Gaylard in an epic battle that saw the game even on five different occasions. By the 19th end, the Pallister team held the lead 17-14 and looked a shoe in when on the next end, the Burke team scored a five shot win to steal the lead by two. The Pallister team responded with a two to tie the match at 19 all in the 21st end. In true Majellan social bowls tradition, a coin was tossed to decide the winner.
The TKM Electrical Turnaround Triples: The weekend long annual TKM Turnaround triples tournament was an outstanding success with 60 bowlers in 20 teams with players from Birrong, Lidcombe, Central Coast and Culburra competing for the significant prize pool. The weather was cold and windy on the Saturday which influenced a number of teams results but the great lunch provided by Betsey Thornberry and her team each day certainly made up for the weather and was very much appreciate by all players.
In first place was the Birrong team led by Skip Ian Stone with four wins and an aggregate of 32 with the Majellan team skipped by Peter Naylor in second with three wins, a draw and a 29 shot aggregate. Third place went to Greg Best and his team from Birrong with three wins and a loss and an aggregate of 49. In fourth place was the Mark Bainbridge team from Birrong with three wins and a loss and an aggregate of 21 with the Majellan team skipped by Terry Burke in fifth place with three wins and an aggregate of 10.
“The tournament is one of our Club’s annual highlights and we are really appreciative of the sponsorship from Troy McCormick and TKM Electrical to make it happen.” Darrel Bellamy, President of the Majellan Club said.
“The Birrong boys are always great fun as well as being very competitive and our players enjoy the challenge and the good company every year” Darrell said.
The next major event for Majellan will be November 1 a Melbourne Cup Mixed Gala Day with BBQ lunch at 11.45 am followed by bowls, sweeps and activities with play paused for the big race. Twilight bowls will be back on November 4.
