Members of the Western Region Police Rescue Squad, in the city for training, were on the roof of the NSW Government building in William Street practising skills that could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.
They raised one of their officers, playing the role of a victim, from the ground below to the building roof as part of the training exercise.
Sergeant Callum Patton, from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Sydney, says the training is held every quarter.
“The Western Region Police Rescue Squad provides specialist support and rescue to police and other emergency services in the Western Region,” he said.

“It has 10 members and two vehicles. They train for three days every quarter in vertical confined space, road crash rescue and operational support.”
As well as their usual equipment, officers involved in the training were sporting something unusual: pink helmets.
One of the squad members has a family member who is very passionate about supporting the McGrath Foundation, Sergeant Patton said, so the pink helmets were chosen to raise awareness of the cause.
The McGrath Foundation raises money to place breast care nurses in communities and to increase breast awareness in young people.
