Parade always thought “daks” was just a made-up word for pants – though maybe that’s because it rhymes so nicely with “trackie”, the shortened form of tracksuit pants.
Whatever the reason for the ignorance, Parade was surprised to read this week that the Daks company was a pioneer in the world of trousers and that, presumably, is why the slang word for clothing in that lower half of the body continues to this day.
So there you go.
So, what’s in a name? Auto parts
THE Daks revelation made Parade think, for reasons that will soon become clear, about mufflers.
That’s because Parade’s brother had a childhood friend called Luke that Parade’s dad insisted, for reasons only he fully understood, on calling Lukey Muffler.
Parade’s dad called him Lukey Muffler for so long that Parade eventually came to think of his brother’s friend as Lukey Muffler as well, and wondered sometimes whether the “Muffler” part was a play on Lukey’s surname or a reference to Lukey’s family car.
It was neither, of course.
It was years later, when Parade saw his first Lukey Muffler from the Lukey company, that it all finally made sense – or as much sense as any nickname can ever make.
It’s a bit of magic from garden star
IT was a product of Norman Lindsay’s imagination, but Parade reckons the rocket lettuce plant in Parade’s backyard is as close to a real-life magic pudding as you can get.
The plant, as Parade has mentioned in this space before, survived the winter despite being almost buried in weeds and receiving no care whatsoever.
Now that it has some room to move, it seems to have gone from incredible to immortal.
Parade has been picking great handfuls of leaves, but any dent has disappeared by the next morning.
At this stage, the plant will outlast the house.
