More vigilance needed to avoid district weed woes
A FEW years ago I noticed a plant with some yellow flowers that I hadn’t seen before outside my hayshed.

I thought the seed of that plant must have come there in hay that I had bought.
I didn’t no anything to the plant and the next year there were a few of these plants growing.
My brother-in-law Les Gibson saw them and told me that they were capeweed and that they had seen large paddocks completely covered by them while travelling in South Australia.
Through being vigilant for the next couple of years, I was able to get rid of the capeweed.
Travelling to South Bathurst through Tarana, O’Connell and The Lagoon yesterday, I thought it distressing to see so much capeweed growing along the roadside.
I felt that many landholders are probably not aware of how quickly it spreads.
Laurie Waddell, the chief weeds officer from Upper Macquarie County Council, told me that it is not declared a noxious weed, but it can cause health problems for farm animals if they start eating it.
I think that there should be some arrangement whereby landholders are responsible for weed control on the roadside with some compensation from the councils if necessary.
Having watched the spread of serrated tussock over the years, it is very obvious that out present weed control system is not satisfactory.

Web words: Adding Wahluu sign to Mount Panorama
I still believe that a sign where people come in, and some information about the people that live around the area, would be a better idea than a sign on the mountain itself.
Christopher Yow
Mount Panorama all the way for me. Mother took me there while I was still in the oven. That was my first visit to the race and I haven't missed a year since. So I will always call it Mount Panorama.

I hold great respect for these elders. The insight and maturity shown is an example for all politically empowered leaders.
Let’s hope future agreements are handled much better between government and representatives of the traditional land.
Brian Timms
Ayers Rock became Uluru and that was good. And now Mount Panorama becomes Wahluu. Great. What is the problem?

Web words: Tired Lithgow deserves better leadership
Lithgow has a lot going for it, not least of all its wonderful community spirit. Sure, the council hasn't always done the best for Lithgow and it's to be hoped the new council will improve matters, but many of the problems experienced in the district are also due to forces beyond council's control. Mine and power station closures have not helped. It would benefit Lithgow if we had the same level of support from the State and Federal Governments as Bathurst does.
Marian Matchett
Lithgow has been too focused on mining and power generation for too long and has missed the fact that it is located within a stone's throw of natural beauty.
Nathan Carter
It's such a shame for Lithgow. The people do deserve much better than they are getting. This town has so much going for it. The infighting does not serve anyone well.

Five out of the nine councillors are new. Give them a chance.
