Bowls Report from Majellan Bowling Club
By Bob the Bowler
Social Bowls
Melbourne Cup Day at the Majellan Bowling Club was celebrated with champagne, barbeques and social mixed triples with three rinks in action.
Allan Clark, John Banning and Helen Gibson scored a 20-8 win over Merle Stephens, Sonia Roots and Ian Dews after setting the pace early in the match with a six end run to score ten points before the Stephens team were on the card.
In an 18 end game, it is next to impossible to overcome a ten shot deficit and despite the Stephens team hitting back with a three and one in the seventh and eighth ends, the Clarke team kept building their lead.
On the 12th and 18th ends the Clarke team delivered the final blow with a three shot win in each end to close out the match comfortably.
Noel Witney, Maureen Taylor and Marlene Naylor won their match by four shots at 20-16 over Tony Hogan, Thelma Smith and David Josh, but not before the Hogan team scored first points.
The Witney team response was a four in the second end and from here they were never headed, despite some valiant attempts to close the gap.
A devastating eight shot run from the fourth to the sixth ends gave the Witney team a lead of 12-3 going into the seventh end where the Hogan team scored a two.
By the end of the ninth end, the Witney team lead was out to 15-5, but a one then five shot win in the next two ends had the Hogan team into double figures and closing.
The Witney team kept their cool and scored a one, two, one combination to push their advantage out again and despite a three in the 15th end and one’s in the final two ends, the Hogan team had run out of ends.
In the final match, Kevin Howard, Bruce Parr and Pauline McIntosh prevailed 13-11 over Betsey Thornberry, Jim Clark and Terry Clark.
The early jump from the Howard team was countered by the Thornberry team with three to give them the lead going into the third end.
A four shot response gave the lead back to the Howard team at 5-3 and with another two in the sixth end, had them in front 7-4 going into the seventh end.
Steady bowls by the Howard team saw their lead out to 10-6 at the end of the 11th end but a four shot come back by the Thornberry team from the 12th to the 14th ends had the game all tied up going into the 15th end.
But the Howard team were hungrier and they took the match by two shots.
Twilight Social Bowls was back at Majellan this week with Roger Cooper, Sid Onus, Val Zylstra and Betsey Thornberry teaming up to defeat Allan Clark, Mary Onus, Linda Densmore and Peter Zylstra 15-7 in a 12-end match.
The Clark team jumped early with a three but the Cooper team responded with four over the next four ends to lead by one going into the fifth end.
The Clark team scored three in the next two ends to lead 6-4 going into the seventh end when the Cooper team took control of the match.
With a five end run scoring 11 unanswered points, which included a five and a three shot win, the Cooper team swamped the Clark team to win going away.
On a cold and windy Saturday afternoon, Brian Stevens and Kerry Connors scored an 18 shot 29-11 win over Paul Kennedy and Allan North after the Stevens team scored a four to get the match underway.
Scoring four in the third end, the Stevens team took control scoring nine unanswered shots in a run from the fifth to the eighth ends.
Before the Kennedy team scored again in the 9th end, the scores were against them 17-5. The Stevens team scored wins in eight of the next 11 ends to run out comfortable winners.
A much closer affair saw Mick McDonald and Peter Zylstra run out 21-17 winners over Tony McNamara and Gus Thurgood in a match that could have gone either way.
The McNamara team scored first with one but the McDonald team came back with two then four to lead 6-1 going into the fourth end.
A four end run for six saw the lead back with the McNamara team 7-6 at the end of the seventh end then with the McDonald team in the eighth end.
The match was even after the ninth, the 12th, the 14th end and the 16th ends.
A three shot win in the 17th end by the McDonald team gave them the break and when they scored five in the 19th and 20th ends, they broke the back of the McNamara team, despite them responding with a three in the last end.
The final match saw Allan Clark, Greg Quartly-Scott and Tony Urza score a 26-24 win over Reece Harvey, Steve Chapman and Kevin Howard after the Harvey team took the early lead with a three from the blocks.
A four-end run for five points gave the Clark team the lead 5-3 going into the sixth end, but the Harvey team response was a six to take the lead back at 9-5 going into the seventh end.
Scoring four in the eighth and ninth ends followed by an eight shot haul from the 11th to the 14th ends, the Harvey team lead was 21-7 going into the 15th end.
The Clark team then won six of the next eight ends, which included a seven, two four’s and a two, to take the lead in the 20th end and hold on to the finish.
Club Championships
In a 2016 Major/Minor Pairs Championship match, Glen Urza and David Josh ran out winners 28-20 over Steve Corby and Darryl Shurmer.
The Urza team jumped impressively with a four from the blocks but a ten shot haul over the next four ends had the Corby team leading 10-4 going into the sixth end.
The Corby team held their lead until, with a three end run for seven, the Urza team bounced back to lead 16-12 going into the 14th end.
Scoring six in the 14th and 15th ends had the Corby team back in front, but a four end six shot haul gave the lead back to the Urza team in the 17th end and they finished with a six in the 21st end to seal the match.
See you next time bowlers.
