On Sunday, December 18, Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) will be screening The Threepenny Opera as part of the National Theatre Live program.
The Threepeny Opera with a script by Berthold Brecht and music by Kurt Weill was written as a satire of traditional opera and a landmark in musical theatre development.
“London scrubs up for the coronation. The thieves are on the make, the whores on the pull, the police cutting deals to keep it all out of sight. Mr and Mrs Peachum are looking forward to a bumper day in the beggary business, but their daughter didn’t come home last night and it’s all about to kick off…”
This is a vivid and darkly comic new adaption with an outstanding cast: Olivier Award-winner Rory Kinnear (Hamlet, Othello, James Bond) as Macheath alongside Rosalie Craig (As You Like It, My Family and Other Animals) as Polly Peachum and Haydn Gwynne (The Windsors, Drop the Dead Donkey) as Mrs Peachum.
This bold, anarchic production is brought to you by a creative powerhouse; adapted by Simon Stephens, (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and directed by Rufus Norris, (Everyman, London Road).
The National Theatre of Great Britain, based in London, is one of the United Kingdom's three most prominent publicly funded performing arts venues, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House.
National Theatre Live – or NT Live - launched in 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre Production of Phaedra with Helen Mirren.
Though each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure cinema audiences get the “best seat in the house” view of each production.
Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast, to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.
Theatre productions are normally filmed in the company’s home theatre in the South Bank area of London, next to the Thames but occasionally productions are filmed in other venues including those in the West End.
NT live represents an affordable way for our patrons to see some of the finest theatre in the world and BMEC is proud to be able to offer them this opportunity.
Please note that this production of The Threepenny Opera comes with a warning! It contains course language and immoral behaviour.
