Bathurst’s Mark Windsor claimed the spoils in the opening round of the Central West Inter-Club Series at Lake Canobolas on Sunday in a hard fought men’s sprint race.

Windsor (one hour, three minutes and 10 seconds) narrowly beat home Orange’s Jack Bilton (1:03:16) to the top spot, with and Mudgee’s Matt Webster (1:04.8) third, at the conclusion of the 750m swim, 20 kilometre bike leg and a 5km run.
While many competitors weren’t a fan of the tricky conditions the weather played into Windsor’s hands, giving him the ideal start to the season.
“The windy conditions help me to a degree because it makes the bike more difficult and that’s where I make up most of my time,” Windsor said.
“Matt Webster is always dominant in the run and he’s also battling there against Rob Woolley from Orange. Jack Bilton has also improved his run leg a lot. The trouble for me is that I’ve got to try and get a start on them.
“I’m not running that bad at the moment though. I had an injury so I took some time off and that time away hasn’t seemed to have done me much harm.”
Other Bathurst contenders in the men’s sprint included Thomas Hanrahan (seventh), Chris Walsh (11th) and Andrew MacKenzie (12th).
Dubbo’s Julie Graham (1:13:14) was victorious in the women’s sprint race.
Orange (5 points) lead the way in the club battle after the opening round, ahead of Mudgee (4 points), Dubbo (3 points), Bathurst (2 points) and Cowra (1 point).
The next stage of the series is at Dubbo on December 11.
