Social Bowls: The Tuesday Social Bowls competition this week encouraged the involvement of four rinks with two games of triples and two of pairs. Daily rink winners were the Frank Farrell, Ian Warren and Bob Jenkins combination scoring a 22-19 win over Kevin Howard, Gary Ellis and Bill Gaylard team. The Farrell team jumped early and held on to the lead through most of the match. The only time the Howard team closed the gap was in the seventh end when the scores were tied at four all. The Farrell team scored six over the next four ends and despite the Howard team scoring a four in the 16th end, the Farrell team came back with a five and held the lead to the finish line.
Paul Kennedy and Ian Dews scored a 25-13 win over John Hobson and John Banning after the Hobson team held the lead for just one end. Taking the end wins 12-9, the Kennedy team jumped ahead with nine unanswered points, which included a five shot win, from the fourth to the seventh end and from here were never headed. Coming home in the final six ends with 10 points to one, the Kennedy team won comfortably.
Tony Hogan, Phil Cummings and Ted Crouch scored a comfortable 20-13 win over Noel Witney, Bruce Parr and Ron McGarry with the Witney team finding the going very tough. Scores were even going into the third end when the Hogan team scored a demoralising seven to break the Witney team. Despite the Witney team coming back with a run of three single shot wins, the Hogan team responded with two single shot wins then a four to lead the match 14-4 going into the 10th end. Despite the Witney team scoring more end wins than the Hogan team at 12-11, the early seven shot win did the damage.
In the final match, brothers Terry and Jim Clark scored a 20-16 win over Bob Bembrick and Gus Thurgood, despite the Bembrick team coming back to lead by one shot after the 10th end following a five shot win. Their lead was taken away by the Clark team in the 12th end when they scored a three, but the Bembrick team came back with their own three shot win on the next end to lead again 13-11. But the Clark team scored nine unanswered points over the next seven ends to lead 20-13 going into the last where the Bembrick team scored a three to go down by four shots.
Rink Winners in the Saturday Afternoon Social competition were John Hobson and Bruce Parr taking a 25-18 win over Alan North and Terry Clark. Scores were even after the second, fourth and sixth ends, but then the Hobson team found their rhythm and scored two, two, five and one to lead 16-6 going into the 11th end. The North team had their own mini revival for the following four ends scoring one, two, two and four to trail by just one shot at the end of the 14th end. The Hobson team finished the stronger however, scoring on six of the next seven ends and despite the North team collecting a three in the 19th end, it was too little too late.
It was a much closer affair on rink five with the Glen Urza, Scott Chapman and Rhys Harvey combination winning by a whisker at 23-22 over the Lotse Kotza, Brian Stevens and Tiger Smith team. The Kotza team scored a three and one to get proceedings underway and with a five in the fifth end they were leading 10-2 at the completion of the sixth end. The Urza team responded with consecutive wins of five, four, two and one to take over the lead at 14-10 after the 10th end and with a three in the 12th end, extended their lead to 17-11. The Kotza team hit back to even the scores at 17 all at the end of the 15th end. The Urza team went to the front 22-17 in the 17th but the Kotza team came back and the match was too close to call at 22-20 going into the last two ends. The Kotza team scored a two in the 19th but the Urza team came back with a one to go to 23-20 and it was down to the last end. The Kotza team won the end with a two but missed out by just one shot. Great game all round.
Keith Hurley and Gus Thurgood scored a convincing 20-11 win over Tony Hogan and Ron McGarry on rink four after the Hogan team scored first points. The Hurley team’s first points were a three and a two to grab the lead early and they were never headed. Winning 13 -8 ends the Hurley team were never under threat with a finishing burst of two, two, three and one from the 16th to the 19th end putting the icing on the cake.
Kevin Howard, Barry O’Keefe and Peter Drew scored a 22-15 win over Alan Clark, Barry O’Keefe and Ian Dews on rink three with the Howard team jumping to a 6-0 lead in the fourth end before the Clark team scored their first points in the fifth end. Although the end wins were close at 10-11, the Howard team were more convincing in their approach with a five, a four and four two point wins in their tally, while the Clark team scored one four and just two end wins with two shots. The Clark team did hit the lead at 13-11 for one end in the 16th when they scored with a four, but the Howard team came straight back with a two to even the match and one end later, scored a five then a four to put the result beyond doubt. Twilight Bowls will be on again on Friday commencing at 5pm and everyone is invited to come and try out the Royal game and have some fun.
