The cheeky fun run is the latest addition to what is becoming a very packed social calendar in Bathurst.
It is a fundraiser for Children’s Tumour Foundation Australia, charged with raising money to support research into neurofibromatosis.
It's undoubtedly a worthy cause, just like so many other worthy causes every year, and it is sure to be a fun and memorable afternoon for all who are brave enough to strip down to their underwear to take part.
And let's hope there are plenty of people in our community – and across the Central West – willing to do just that because not every city gets this chance.
A skim through previous hosts of this fun run reveals some of the biggest cities in the western world – New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, Chicago, Melbourne … the list goes on.
Bathurst is the first NSW centre west of the Blue Mountains and one of the first Australian cities outside of the capitals to attract the fun run.
Perhaps that says something about the organisers’ preconceived impressions of our city but, whatever the reason, it is something we should embrace.
The “visitor economy” is becoming more of a buzz word every year and it is will be one city’s ability to rise above the pack that will see it succeed or fail in this market.
Thanks to Mount Panorama, Bathurst is already blessed to have the sort of brand recognition across Australia that other regional cities could only dream of but there is never time to rest on our laurels.
The more events we attract, the more people we attract, and the more dollars we have swirling around the city.
Start-up events like the B2B and national BMX titles have brought new people to our region and as long as we make it a priority to ensure they enjoy their stay, is the word will quickly spread about the great things we have to offer.
That's not to say the Cupid’s Undie Run will provide much of a boost to the Bathurst coffers but nor should it – it is being run for a different reason altogether.
But the way our city embraces it and contributes to its success will say a lot about our community and help keep new events rolling in. So whether you’re joining in the run or not, you should be glad to see it coming here.
