Social Bowls
Rink winners for the Tuesday Social Bowls competition this week were the Kevin Howard, Phil Cummins and Ian Dews team winning 21-14 over Greg Quartly-Scott, Peter Stueckrat and Terry Clark after the Quartly-Scott team had the early lead. The Howard team assumed the lead at 5-4 at the end of the fourth end, but the Quartly-Scott team were in front again at the end of the sixth. The Howard team then won seven of the next eight ends to lead by 14-8 after the 14th end and by the 17th end, their lead was 16-11. The Howard team finished stronger with a three and two in the final two ends to win going away.
Winner of the runners up prize with a 20-17 win, were the Frank Farrell, Barry O’Keefe and Gus Thurgood combination over Terry Burke, Barry O’Keefe and Bob Bembrick. The Burke team controlled the card for much of the match after taking the lead in the third end. But the Farrell team, who were behind 16-10 going into the 17th end, dropped a bombshell in the 19th by scoring a massive six shots to give them the lead 19-16 and they held the lead to the finish line.
John Hobson, Dave Kelly and Bob Jenkins scored a 21 shot win at 32-11 over Ted Crouch, Bruce Parr and John Banning after jumping to a 6-0 lead before the Crouch team scored first points. With a 14-7 end win advantage, the Hobson team dominated the score card not allowing the Crouch team into double figures until the 20th end.
Tony McNamara and Ian Warren won 29-14 over Paul Kennedy and Ron McGarry, after the game was all square at 6 all at the end of the seventh end. The McNamara team grabbed a 13-6 lead over the next two ends that left the Kennedy team trailing for the remainder of the match.
Saturday was fine and warm with four rinks of social bowlers and two rinks of Club Championships in play. Paul Kennedy and Kerry Connors combined for a 32-13 win over Rhyce Harvey and Darrell Bellamy, after the Kennedy team jumped to a 9-0 lead before the Harvey team scored first points in the eighth end. The Kennedy team won 15 of the 21 ends played to dominate the card.
In another powerful display, Butch Stevens, Ken Hartwig and Ron McGarry scored a 33-17 win over Tony Urza, Kevin Howard and Barney Lavelle. The Urza team jumped early
but the scores were all even at 8 all at the end of the eighth end. A three end run collecting 11 shots gave the Stevens team the lead 18-8 in the 10th end and they steamed home collecting 12 shots in the final eight ends.
Another big margin win of 24-8 for the Garry Cameron, Terry Clark and Greg Quartly-Scott team against Alan Clark, Mick Tremain and Tony Press. The Cameron team jumped with a six in the first end and cruised from there. They won nine of the last ten ends with 13 points to simply block access to the card for the Clark team.
Jean Wild, Val Zylstra and Marj Nyland had a 14-5 win over Pauline Clark, Marie Luck and Betsy Thornberry in a “lead from the front” performance. With an end win margin of seven to five, the odds were with the Wild team and they took full advantage to give them the match.
Club Championships
In a Mixed Pairs Championship match Alan and Pauline Clark bested the Peter and Val Zylstra team by 25-17 after the Zylstra team scored first points. Scores were even at 3 all in the fifth and six all in the seventh end, but a four in the ninth and a six in the 13th end gave the Clark team the break and they held on to the finish.
In a Major-Minor Pairs match between Allan and Jim Clark and Tony Hogan and Peter Zylstra, the Clark team scored a dominant 24-12 win. The Clark team certainly came to play bowls with them losing just one point in the first seven ends and winning 13 ends to 8 overall.
Peter Naylor and Gus Thurgood teamed up to defeat Glen Urza and David Josh 21-11 in another Major-Minor Pairs match. The Naylor team jumped early but the Urza team came back to lead 3-1 going into the fifth end. It was even after the sixth but the Naylor team pulled away to win 14 ends to 7 and run out comfortable winners.
In this week’s final Championship match, John Hobson and Marlene Naylor defeated Tony McNamara and Merle Stephens 22-14 in a Mixed Pairs Championship round. The Hobson team dropped just three shots in the first 13 ends to dominate the card leading 17-5 going into the 14th end but it was all over with the McNamara team reaching double figures in the 20th end.
The Reliance Credit Union Oberon RSL Men’s Triples tournament was conducted at Oberon Bowling Club this weekend with 16 teams entered with players from as far afield as Mackay, Terrigal Lake Conjola as well as teams from Blayney and a strong contingent from the Bathurst City Club. Majellan was represented by just the one team of Tony Hogan, Allan North and Bob Jenkins who came away with four wins and one loss to score a very creditable fourth place.
With the current great weather, what better way to spend your Friday evening than playing twilight bowls at the Majellan Bowling Club. Make up a team or just come along and join in on the fun with a barbeque to follow the bowls. Play will commence around 5pm.
See you next time bowlers and as Mark Twain said, “The secret to getting ahead is getting started”.
