Taking on a NSW team packed with Sheffield Shield talents, the Comets were distinct underdogs.
However, the rivals pushed each other all the way to final over of the four-day match before splitting the honours in a draw on Thursday.
Dean, who batted in the top order, made 14 in his first knock, but in his second was dismissed just shy of 50 to help the Comets to a commanding lead.
NSW needed 466 for victory and while that seemed unlikely, a stunning 210 from Shield opener Nick Larkin and 80 from Ben Rohrer swung things in their favour.
NSW needed 14 runs and ACT two wickets in the final over to win – but in the end neither could fulfil their side of the equation.
NSW finished at 8-473.
