Played at the Mollymook Golf Club over 54-holes, O’Malley was within four shots of the lead heading into his final round.
He had carded a four-over 76 to start the $70,000 tournament and backed that up on Friday with an even-par 72 which saw him climb up from tied 16th inside the top five.
The man to catch on the final day was New Zealand’s Martin Pettigrew, but O’Malley was not able to do so.
The former European Tour winner carded another 76 to finish the tournament at eight over, while Pettigrew (-2) was crowned the champion.
“I was a bit nervous down the stretch, but once I hit it in close on 17 and made birdie, I was feeling comfortable,” Pettigrew told pga.com.au.
O’Malley’s next tournament is the $1.5 million Australian PGA Championships at Royal Pines,
