Emergency services were called to bushland off Hawkesbury Road at Hawkesbury Heights about 9pm on Friday after a passer-by noticed the campfire was out of control.
It burnt an area of about 50 x 30 metres before being extinguished.
A 51-year-old man was arrested by police from Blue Mountains Local Area Command and charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless to its spread.
The Victoria man was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
