After missing the cut the past two years at Royal Pines Resort, this time the Bathurst golfer survived to take part in the weekend rounds.
He ended up in 80th position at eight-over the card, well behind victor Harold Varner III who clinched victory at nine-under.
But on the opening day O’Malley sat in the top 10 as he carded a three-under 69, and were it not for a bogey on the 18th, he would have been even higher.
O’Malley’s opening round was solid as it included birdies on the sixth, 12th, 14th and 15th, the conditions much more friendly than 12 months earlier when he opened with an 80.
Unfortunately O’Malley was unable to capitalise on that start. He shot back-to-back rounds of 75 on Friday and Saturday then a five-over 77 to finish.
