Some of the state’s best and brightest juniors flocked to Bathurst for the John Whittaker and Dorn Fogarty Cup Under 10s State Teams Championship.

The tournament had 48 competitors play in both the John Whittaker (boys) and Dorn Fogarty (girls) respectively, meaning a total of 96 athletes took part in play at the Bathurst Tennis Centre.
Bathurst Tennis Centre manager Andrew Mitton said the event was a great occasion for the club and the sport in the region.
“It was great for Bathurst and every single family came, bringing over 300 people to the town,” Mitton said.
“It’s good for the local economy, good for the profile for tennis in Bathurst and good for the club itself.”
Both the boys and girls tournaments had 12 teams each – six country teams, five metro teams and one representing the ACT.
Chloe Braiser was Bathurst’s sole representative, who competed in the Central West Cyclones team.
The Cyclones team also featured Micayla Bourne, Alex Stevens and Ellen Dobel and was managed by Tahnee Edgecombe.
The boys Cyclones team was made up of Ben Anderson, Ashton Mcleod, Hugh Payne and Joshua Busa, who was managed by Keagan McCrohon.
While the girls Cyclones failed to record a overall victory in any of the pool stage matches, they managed a play-off victory over the South West Heat to finish 11th.
The boys Cyclones managed two wins in their pool.
One set was played in each game and even though Braiser’s team did not manage an overall victory, she won seven of the ten games she was involved in.
Braiser won an impressive 50 games and only lost 34.
Over the tournament each team had four players in each.
The South East Waves, from the country, won the boys competition.
A metro side lifted the Dorn Fogarty Cup.
Both the boy’s and girl’s competitions featured two groups of six respectively and had a somewhat professional feel to them.
“It’s run like the Davis Cup and each team has a manager on the court,” Mitton said.
“We have some of the top 30 boys and girls tennis players in New South Wales come.”
The Bathurst Tennis Center has been supporting the championships for a number of years and Tennis NSW said without the tennis centre’s support, the tournament would not have been possible.

Tennis NSW CEO Alistair McDonald said the tournament is a pathway for junior athletes to improve.
